I can so relate. We are busting to get ours paid off, should be in the next two years or so.

Wayne would never do a 30 year mortgage. Ours was a 15.

(What happened was, when we bought this house in 1996, interest rates were high. Even with great credit. We had a 15 year loan.

When the rates dropped in 2003, we refinanced. And went 15 again. The banks weren't very creative back then.)

So, it actually took 18 years and change, to pay it off.

But, it's done now! smile

Remember that your real estate taxes will no longer be paid by the escrow account at your bank. The bills will (hopefully) be coming to you

It's a good idea to check with the agencies that collect real estate taxes to make sure they know to bill you, instead of the bank.

Otherwise, your first notice might be when the house has been auctioned off for unpaid taxes.

We never had an escrow account, ed.

We've always paid our taxes and insurance. smile

Well then you are already in the habit then. Most banks around here require escrow. I know some people don't like it. I'm glad they handle the taxes for me. Saves me the hassle.

We had an escrow on our first house, in Ohio. It wasn't Bank of America.

When we moved to Texas, BoA said they didn't do them. This was in 96.

Maybe they do them now. confuse

Congrats FWM, what an accomplishment. I have about 10 years to go. Maybe a bit less. I also pay a lot more each month but the term of my loan is another 10 years so I focus on that. It means it will be paid off well before retirement and DD going to college.

People used to do it, all the time, back in the day.

It's getting harder and harder to do.

I guess we were a little bit lucky. And a lot, conservative, with our money.

That worked, for us. And, I'm very grateful for it.

Congratulations!! This is really something to be proud of, especially in this day and age. Not to rain on your parade, but keep some of that "saved" money for future repairs - roof, wiring, etc. etc. Seems like there is no end to it.... But when it is all yours it does not seem so bad....
