A couple of things that might be related. I hear that the electric fuel pumps are cooled by the gas. If one runs low on gas, continually it is probable that the pump could overheat, epically with older pumps. My mechanic tells me that a lot of folks come in with failed fuel pumps and the majority of them state that they "just filled up the tank" , prior to failing. I have not heard of the hammer trick with fuel pumps. But I am living proof that it works with starters and for the reason stated in the question. At first, I didn't believe it but that's exactly what helped stretch the life in a starter in our 92 Isuzu PU. Whack it with a hammer while somebody turns the key and the starter would engage. That worked for several months before we eventually replaced it.
