When they keep chickens close together, they don't have to install heaters. The body heat the chickens share keeps them all warm. By giving them more room, they rob the chickens of the heat, so they have to heat the chicken house. This is why farmers don't like it primarily.

This is somewhat of a local story for me. My state is the #1 turkey producing state in the U.S. and the farmers are worried the chicken regs will be carried over to turkeys.

Quick note: when you see "free range chicken" you get warm fuzzy thoughts of chickens cavorting in a field doing as they please. All it means is the chicken has access to a window. That's all free range means. Sad.
