Parents of Georgia teen found dead in gym mat sue classmates amid federal investigation

  Media Sources // Thursday, 15 January 2015 14:38 //

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The parents of a Georgia teenager found dead inside a rolled-up gym mat two years ago filed a lawsuit accusing classmates of killing him at school before criminal investigators and school officials covered up the deed.

The wrongful death lawsuit by the family of 17-year-old Kendrick Johnson of Valdosta names 38 defendants, including three Lowndes High School classmates the lawsuit accuses of attacking Johnson on Jan. 10, 2013. The suit was filed in DeKalb County Superior Court on Monday, just after the second anniversary of the teenager's death.

Lowndes County sheriff's investigators concluded long ago that Johnson died in a freak accident, saying he became stuck upside down while trying to retrieve a gym shoe that fell into the upright mat. His parents, Kenneth and Jacquelyn Johnson, insist their son was slain. The lawsuit names specific students and one parent blamed for the teenager's death by his family, who are seeking $100 million in damages.

Well more info is needed. Did the parent's have an investigation conducted in which evidence was found that their son was attacked or otherwise put in the mats as a prank?

I remember this case. There was no way that kid ended up in that mat by virtue of a freak accident.

They had an independant autopsy done that showed he died of blunt force trauma, while the county coroner said he died of positional asphyxiation.  Those are two very different results.  The FBI is still investigating it.

Picture is spoilered because it is of Johnson's body in the gym mat after it was moved onto its side. The gym mat was discovered standing upright. -

That kid was murdered. And the police just didn't want to be bothered.

I hope not.  If the local police won't do their jobs, this might be the only way to get any answers.

This is what I believe.

I'm not sure why the police botched the investigation.

I live about 30 minutes from Valdosta.  There are lots and lots of rumors going around about this.   Accurate information can be found at the Valdosta Daily Times.

Rev. Floyd Rose, president of the Valdosta Chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, was close to the Johnson family.  He helped organize rallies; he worked with a businessman who put up $10,000 in reward money (which was returned after no one came forward with information); he put up his personal residence to bond Kendrick Johnson's father out of jail.  These are his exact words: "Finally, without any credible evidence, which has yet to be presented, that Kendrick Johnson was murdered, I would have to believe that the coroner, the district attorney, 6 GBI agents, investigators from the sheriff's office, the medical examiner in Atlanta, and Macon, members of the Georgia Investigation Division, and other school personnel, would have to be part of a massive cover-up, that someone, yet unknown, would have hatched, for reasons we don't know, at a time not yet determined."

Many people of Rev. Rose's stature in this area believe that it was accidental and find it hard to believe that dozens and dozens of people, including high school students, are involved in some massive conspiracy to cover this up.  I honestly don't know but I lean in the same direction.
