A flock of flirting flamingos is pure, passionate, pink pandemonium-a frenetic flamingle-mangle-a discordant discotheque of delirious dancing, flamboyant feathers, and flamingo lingo.
You say that like it's a bad thing. Adultery with spousal approval is just description of what it is. It's no worse than saying "moving from one end of a pool to another under your own power is 'swimming'."

It's adultery. So what?
And therein lies the trouble with the world. It's going to hell in a handbasket.

How is NOT cheating on your spouse causing that though?
I'm not saying I disagree with the direction the country/world is going, I just disagree with what's carrying the handbasket.
The general acceptance of moral depravity as a "personal choice" shows a marked decline in society. Morality is what keeps us better as a country, as a society, as people. When you decide that certain actions are "no big deal", you are simply feeding in to the decline of society.
Who's carrying the handbasket? Everyone who says "who cares" and "so what?"

If the answer is nothing--then the response of "so what"--is valid.
This is no different.
My main point is that this is NOT a conversation that a teenage girl wants to have with her parents, so the advice from whatever columnist this is--is stupid.

The problem I see with this reasoning is, people haven't changed, and people's behavior hasn't changed, in 5000 years.
Weapons have gotten more powerful, and we have lots more toys, but people's overall behavior hasn't changed.
Moral decline? I don't think so. Years ago, long before there was DNA analysis, I read a study done in three maternity hospitals in Cleveland, Ohio, in (I think) 1956.
Looking at ONLY the blood type of the new mother, her new baby, and her husband,
sixteen percent of the babies could NOT have bee fathered by the husband.
I suspect that with effective birth control options today, that number might be smaller ... but it might also be bigger because DNA is more accurate than blood type in ruling out paternity.

I disagree. I believe that the decline of society is due to, for lack of a better term, the busybodiness of people that want to force their version of morality on others. Moral to one may be immoral to someone else. Who are we to judge the morality of anyone else, as long as they are not forcing their beliefs about morality on others?
Couldn't it also be said that when you decide that certain actions "are a big deal", when in reality they aren't, that you are feeding in to the decline of society?

That is called chaos. Society has ALWAYS had mores and rules and laws. That is what makes us civilized.

This thread is about mores and rules and laws about SEX.
The laws have changed in recent years, but ...
not the behavior. Which means (to me) that the mores haven't changed a bit.
I don't think people's consensual sexual behavior leads to chaos in society, any more than it ever has.
If, on the other hand, we were to talk about murder, the rules and mores HAVE changed. For example, it's no longer acceptable in the United States to lynch people because of the color of their skin.

To say that the change in societal mores regarding sex do not affect society as a whole ignores a lot. As an example - having children out of wedlock has become normal and acceptable, which has led to more single mothers, many of them on welfare that society has to pay for. So, yes, loosening moral values does impact society as a whole. The acceptance of men who walk away from the women they get pregnant shifts the financial burden from the family to society.
Studies have PROVEN that children raised in traditional 2 parent homes are less likely to do drugs and more likely to become productive members of society.
We have become a nation where personal choices only seem to matter but personal responsiblity has fallen by the wayside.

I agree that without mores and rules and laws there would be chaos. But what makes us civilized isn't that we have those things, it's that those things are fair and just. Not only for those that agree with us, but for everyone. When they are fair and just for all, then we are hat the height of being a civilized society, where the rights and beliefs of all matter, not just the rights and beliefs of some.
A prime example of this would be countries that have religious law as the law of the land. Would you say they are "civilized"? They have mores and rules and laws, so they must be, right?

But "swinging" is not really an issue if personal responsibility in the way out of wedlock births are.

It is when it teaches your kids that sex with lots of different people outside of marriage is perfectly ok with you. Then YOU may not be having the illegitimate kids, but your kids might. What you teach your kids matters.

I'd still like to know if it's really swinging that the LW came across, or if it's polygamy and the LW just misunderstood and thought it was swinging.
It's an important distinction because I agree that teaching the kids that sex with everyone and their brother or sister is a bad example to set, but it's not bad to set an example of loving and bonding your life with more than one person, if that's what works for everyone involved, and it goes along with the religious beliefs of everyone involved.
