LOL, that would look silly but at least they would be taller than me.
I LOVE wearing heels. I agree, it is a dressy look and no flat shoe can end up looking as dressy as a nice, heeled shoe IMHO. To my complete annoyance, my left knee is the reason I've given up the heels. I'd rather be able to take my daily walk than wear the pretty heels that put more stress on my knee. Life is trade-offs.
Husker, from your description of the event it sounds like the younger crowd doesn't agree with us on the heels issue. How about the rest of the outfit on the non-high heels crowd? Were they dressy except for flat shoes?
No, Husker - the older women grew up thinking they had to do what they could to please men with their appearance - including torturing their feet with stupid shoes (sorry, Vette). Younger women don't have the same mentality and know they do not have to wear heels, which have been proven to be bad for your feet, legs and back, in order to be attractive - even if men would prefer it.

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.
I am really out of the habit of wearing heels, for two reasons. A) I have a foot issue, so most heels are very painful for me to wear. B) I am not allowed to wear heels at work, so I have few places I would even be wearing them
I like heels, and before I hurt my foot, I loved wearing them. I just can't do it these days for any length of time

Basically the same, overall, except for the shoes.

Well, I could agree with you--but then we'd both be wrong.

This.
And, once upon a time, Chinese woman bound their feet...
As for the heel generalizers...I LOVE how I look and feel in heels. I feel sexy and I look sexy (to me anyway, and that's all that matters right?)
And yes, many women want to look beautiful for their men, and what is so wrong with that? Are we so selfish that we can't take steps (no pun intended) to look attractive to our own husbands/boyfriends? My bf likes my hair long so I keep it long, what's the big deal if I have to spend an extra 2 minutes in the shower? I like his face shaved so he keeps it shaved. When we go out, I want to look nice for him so I doll up. That doesn't make me a mindless woman betraying step ford wife.

I have been relegated to wearing ugly shoes. I miss heels. I recently found a couple pairs of shoes I can wear. I was wearing house shoes all the time.
But I really miss wearing my high heels.

I'm sure the fashion police could have said something negative about your outfit too. As long as they are appropriately formal, who cares? At the end of the day other women's feet are none of your business.
And I say this as someone who lurves me a good stiletto.
I don't think flats look appropriate with skirts or dresses. Flats look juvenile to me. If you want to look put together, it's heels. And it has nothing to do with looking good for men, it's about just looking good period.

Not anymore. That's your opinion. My DD is 25. She is extremely stylish as are her friends. They never wear heels anymore. Styles change. Flats are in now...

I had the 6 inch heels. I loved them. (and I am 5'9" and I never cared that I was taller than everyone)
But I did wear pumps a lot. Those were my "flats". They were about 1 and 1/2 to 2 inches high.
And my boots. I loved my boots.
I don't have a problem with wearing flats with dresses and skirts.
They can be just as cute.

Well if we want to base it on our children and what they do...mine is 24 and works in fashion and doesn't own a pair of flats except the ones she wears on the subway to commute. No one she knows wears flats.

I myself still wear heels at times, but I never claimed to be a fashionista. I probably have 50 or 60 pairs of heels (NJN can attest to this). My husband asks me every time I wear them why I am. He thinks they look uncomfortable. Now boots are another thing. He loves him some boots.

I wore heels almost every day for 30 years. I've had 6 foot surgeries. My doctors blamed my heels. I will NEVER put another pair of heels on. Ever. And I dont give even one **** if people think I look less than stylish. If you've had foot surgery you'll know what I mean.

I don't blame you one bit!
I never buy (or would suggest buying) shoes that don't fit properly or that hurt! My feet are naturally small and narrow so heels don't hurt me at all. In fact, they are pretty comfy.

I have small wide feet with bunions. I have enough metal in my feet to set off the detectors. I'm almost always shoeless now. My highest number of footwear owned was 272 pairs. I'd sure like to have that money back!!

I don't wear heels. Never have. Don't want to. I dress for comfort. When I do need to dress up (very rare), I have 1 pair of black dress shoes for formal occasions and 1 pair of black mary jane'ish shoes for dressy but not formal occasions. If I'm ever judged on my footwear at a function, I will take that as a cue that my presence isn't wanted and I will leave.
One thing I do find distasteful is flip flops in the wrong setting.
I don't mind them with dresses or skirts or anything else.
At the mall, no big deal.
At church, not the place.
Back yard or family gathering at home, fine.
Wedding, or any other kind of party like it, wear real shoes.

I had to wear a pair for a while everywhere because it was the only pair of shoes I had that didn't hurt my feet or legs.
I felt embarrassed having to wear them to church and such.
Granted they were nice flip flops and not the cheap beach flip flops but still.

I have a great aunt who has worn heels every single day of her life since she was around 16. She is in her late 70's. She cant walk flat footed. If she isn't wearing heels, she is walking on her toes.
And she has the legs of a 20something. Not even kidding.
She still wears mini skirts too. LOL....

I like my flats, and I rock them.
You can look good and still wear healthy, comfortable shoes. I will never, ever sacrifice comfort for appearance. I love myself, and try to treat me well.

Two knee surgeries later and severe arthritis in both knees with a future double knee replacement looming there are no heels in my present or future. I wear dressy flats and if that is not acceptable then I can stay away from your shin dig. No skim off my nose.

But that isn't the case here. It's the older women who WERE wearing heels.

Just because you like them doesn't mean they are in style. In fact, I would say just the opposite. Your taste is shall we say, questionable...

Plus, wearing them occasionally for certain events is NOT going to result in some horrific joint damage.
Wearing them occasionally would mean walking occasionally at the even that I was required to attend. May I could be wheeled in though. I have zero balance due to knee surgery. I wouldn't make it to the car without falling over.

So? It is still uncomfortable, and would serve no purpose. I wear nice, unobtrusive flats to formal events. I have zero need to be taller, or to make my bottom more shapely, or whatever magical thing heels are supposed to do. But by all means, be nasty and judge women by their footwear.
