Plus, wearing them occasionally for certain events is NOT going to result in some horrific joint damage.
Wearing them occasionally would mean walking occasionally at the even that I was required to attend. May I could be wheeled in though. I have zero balance due to knee surgery. I wouldn't make it to the car without falling over.
I don't know how many times I can say the same thing over and over. I am NOT talking about people who have severe joint damage or people for whom wearing heels would pose some big hardship. In fact, just the opposite.

Well, I could agree with you--but then we'd both be wrong.
Part of it could possibly also be geographical and/or rural.
Most of these people come from small towns in podunkville USA like I do, and this may be the only, or one of the few times they've really traveled anywhere.
The wives of the company "big-wigs" who undoubtedly travel more (and are over 40) were all wearing heels.

But when you are not used to wearing them, they are even more uncomfortable.
But that's what I'm saying. Learn to do so.
I don't like wearing a jacket and tie, either--and to be fair, some men were wearing jeans which I didn't think was appropriate, either.
Jackets and ties are out of style too. I'm trying to remember the last time G wore a tie or dress pants. He wears jeans and a jacket. And looks much better than most guys wearing a suit.

Most of his formal events aren't in Tennessee. Most are in NYC, California, Toronto, Vegas and such. He attends 3 or 4 a year. But in his business, it's the norm.

I have worn a size 7 shoe since I was in Middle School. At the time, my feet were considered huge. I wore women's sizes when girls my age were still wearing little girl shoes. But the benefit of wearing women's shoes, is that I got an early start on wearing heels.
There are days I feel like wearing flats. I have some really cute d'orsay flats that are a little more dressy. I have flats that are most uncomfortable. I have heels that are uncomfortable. And I have heels that are more comfortable than slippers. I admitted myself into the hospital when I gave birth, wearing heels.
I have noticed that if I don't wear heels on a regular basis, I don't do as well when I do wear them. So I make it a conscious effort to wear them at least once or twice a week.
For formal events, as long as I am able, I would chose heels over flats, if I were wearing a dress. At the very least, there are kitten heels. If I were unable to wear heels, I would probably see a podiatrist.

Did your feet get bigger after the kids? I used to be a 7, but now wear an 8.
Actually, a lot of people wear suits. I see it every day and I live in a town of only 23,000 people.
For an event listed as "formal" whether on the invitation on whatever, I would wear formal attire. Jeans are not appropriate formal attire. When someone goes to the expense and the trouble of hosting a formal event, it is the mannerly thing to do to show up in formal attire. They have put up quite a bit of money to make it a formal event versus just a casual get together so one should reciprocate and wear formal attire. There is a time and a place for all types of dress. Knowing where and when to wear all types of dress is important.

My feet got bigger when I started wearing work shoes. Standing on my feet 10-12 hours a day on concrete meant having to wear the most comfortable shoes possible.
My feet have spread out.
I also have protruding bones, my toes and feet are misshapen from wearing the heals for so long. I could have surgery to repair it. But I don't have that kind of money.

I wore a 7 1/2 when I was pregnant, but after the weight loss, I returned to a 7 within a few months after giving birth. Weird, I know. My mother's feet grew a couple sizes after having us kids.

Less metropolitan areas are usually a bastion for fashion...
In my husband's world, suits are pretty much considered old fashioned and frumpy. It's either tuxes or jeans and a jacket.

A shirt with sleeves. If you really want to be classy, find one without a beer company logo. (Might have to borrow one.)
As I said, most of his events (actually ALL of them, he's never been to one in TN since we've been married) are outside of TN. He doesn't own one shirt with a company logo, although the companies that he endorses love to send them to him. He just gives them to Goodwill.

I am sure O4 will wear her best cut off daisy dukes and bandana halter top at any even she is invited to.
Maybe she will doll up a little vit and wear her reddest lip stick and wash her feet.

Well I also live 45 minutes away from one of the biggest cities in the US and I see suits there all the time as well. I see suits at all sorts of functions in cities all around the US as well. Maybe it's just particular to the places your husband goes that suits are not required.
But again, if an event is publicized as formal or if formal is listed on the invitation than guests should wear formal attire. Jeans are not formal attire. If someone is going to the trouble to host a formal affair, than one should respect that and dress accordingly.

And just because it is that way in the circle he is in, doesn't mean it is that way everywhere.

I think this is really rude. I know in our circle that there are several forms of dress. Formal would mean a tux. Dress would mean khaki pants and a button down shirt with dress shoes for men. No tie. I have never heard a rule about women MUST wear heels to be taken seriously.
I'm sure in other areas there are different rules but our rules follow along the lines of ohfour.

In the last year I have seen suits at weddings, funerals, graduations (at DD's college graduation almost every man in attendance had a suit on), job interviews (I have interviewed over 15 people for the school and every one of them had a suit on, as did every other man in the room interviewing) college orientations (when I took DD to a "pre-frosh day 2/3 of the fathers in attendance had a suit on) the list goes on and on. I think there are a lot more people wearing suits than you might realize.
Maybe us northerners, with all of our lax manners, finally got something right? Lol. Or maybe it's just cold up here and we like the layers.

Ohfour said jeans were appropriate at a formal affair. Would you agree with that?
Well, now, that really depends. I'm betting the "formal affairs" that ohfour and her rocker husband attend are quite different than say, a doctor or lawyer might attend.

This would depend on the invitees. Lets take The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction. This is considered a formal affair and the invites state that. Yet many of the guests wear jeans. I guess it's a "know your demographic" issue, but not all events that are called "formal" actually warrant formal attire. Yes, there are people there in tuxes, but they are usually old people and wouldn't look great in the normal attire.

I totally agree. I used to cringe when I'd see men in jeans at award shows, but now it seems to be the norm and part of the fashion.
And what is acceptable is not only by what crowd you are catering to, but I'm sure it's also quite regional. The northeast tends to be a lot more formal than anywhere else in the country.

I guess I just don't get this. Why would you spend time judgin someone's attire or footwear instead of being happy they attended? Don't you have other things to talk about?
It seems petty to me.

Exactly!
Look at the VMA's, for example. Jeans can be very sharp.

No way.
Of course no one would spend time judging people's attire. But you don't exactly want to stick out (in a bad way) either. its like using manners. No one would spend time talking about you if you used bad manners, but it might help them form an opinion of you.

This is a good point.
I just assume if an invite says formal it mean the traditional definition of formal.
Do you think people use the word "formal" on invites without knowing what that means?

Seems petty to me too. Footwear is not a big deal. If it were a tuxedo only event and they showed up in a suit then I'd think they didn't have/couldn't afford a tux. I don't think I've ever noticed someone's shoes unless they were outstandingly pretty or ugly. I notice garish outfits in general. Mostly I'm happy when people come to something I've thrown. But then, I don't hang with people that it matters to me what they wear on their feet.

You're not sticking out if everyone else is wearing what you are wearing. Husker is mad because the majority didn't conform to his standards...

Yes. That is the problem. Too bad it doesn't mean he is right just because it is his opinion.

And? I thought we left the era where our whole lives centered around making not just our husbands but all men happy.
