DEAR ABBY: I am 22 and will graduate from college soon. I have worked hard for the last four years and will graduate with two degrees.
Recently, I decided to throw away all my makeup. I rarely wore it, and I think I am beautiful without it. Now that I'm about to enter the job market, I'm worried society won't see me as looking professional without it. I have appropriate dress clothes and I'm comfortable without the added "fluff" of makeup, but how will others see me? Is makeup a necessary part of the business attire?
I want to go into job interviews with as much confidence as possible and do well in my career. Also, if I wear makeup to an interview, will it be necessary for me to wear it on a daily basis once I get a job? Please enlighten me. -- BARE AND BEAUTIFUL
DEAR B AND B: Employers expect applicants to put their best foot forward during a job interview. But unless wearing makeup is part of the job description, I don't think it's a requirement.
How others will view you depends upon how well you perform the job for which you're hired. If you do it well, you will be respected. If you don't, no amount of makeup will put you in a better light. Being well-groomed does not necessarily mean wearing makeup.
Well, looking the part at work is important. So, if you are grooming dogs all day, maybe nobody cares, if you are dealing with clients and the public , then you might want to care or you might find yourself getting passed by on promotions or not being taken as seriously.
Isnt it ridiculous that men are hired and promoted on their work but women have to wear make up and heels?
Yes, looking the part is important.
I don't know why a woman with lipstick looks more the part when a man doesn't have to do anything but shave. If that.

I rarely wear make up to work. And mostly, I wear hoodies and jeans (in the winter). My company doesn't give a flip as long and I'm productive and increase the bottom line. I'm as far up the ladder as I care to go. I don't care for a promotion, just pay me what I'm worth. They've never failed to do that.

Last time I wore make up was when I got married. Never wore it to work. Nor on job interviews. Don't wear it at home.

At one point I would not leave the house without it. But I also had a personal rule that if it wasn't on when I left the house, I didn't need it.
So I never was one to carry anything more than a lipstick, Maybe. Mostly nothing.
And I always did and when I wear it now, which is few and far between, it is because I want to. Not for anyone else but me.
I remember in high school, spending an hour at least making my make up look like I wasn't wearing make up.
I realized how stupid that was and by Senior year I rarely wore it at all.

I think it depends on her face. Some people can pull it off. Some people would need make-up for a professional job. She says she looks nice without it, maybe she would be ok.
Most women only need a little under eye concealer, mascara and lip balm. Looking polished doesn't mean a full face. I always wear concealer and mascara. Maybe lipstick.
I wear some concealer, light foundation, and I do some light eye shadow. I only eyeline my upper eye lids because to do the lower just doesn't look that great on me and I wear contacts so it tends to smudge in a way I don't like. I wear mascara and I actually do use a white eyeliner on my lower lids which takes some of the redness out of the lower lid. Other than that I am good to go. Sometimes I wear lipstick. I don't bother with blush as am more fair but have somewhat red undertones and a natural blush.
I think you have to change your makeup as you go through life. And, the older you get, the less makeup you should wear, or at least you have to know how to apply it because harsher looks are very aging. Like there is a time to give up the heavy black eyeliner outlining your whole eye. Yes, you can wear it a 20 and a 20 yr old can wear any looks she wants to wear. However, if you are 50 and still applying your makeup the same way, then you need to really look in the mirror and realize it probably isn't working for you anymore.
But, wearing makeup is no different than wearing a nice outfit or nice pair of shoes or whatever. The point is to enhance your appearance a bit, not so sure what is wrong with that. I don't need to wear anything other than a burlap sack to stay warm either but you probably enjoy nice clothes so what is the diff?
As Jeremy Renner says, women only need frame the face - brows, lips and lashes. Make sure your brows are well-groomed, a little mascara, and lip gloss or lipstick.
I personally hate mascara. I wear a light foundation, a touch of blush, eye liner, natural color shadow, and lip stick.

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.
Honestly, if this woman can't decide whether she needs makeup or not, how is she going to function in a job?
Personally, I'm on the make up bandwagon, but my hand has gotten a lot lighter over the years. Overly made up women over a certain age tend to look older, IMO. And I pay more attention to conditioning my skin.

I agree with you on both points. I worry about her functioning in the world if she can't sort this out alone.
And nd making your skin super healthy looking means you can go lighter on the make up for sure! I am addicted to Meaningful Beauty (Cindy Crawford's skin care line). I have noticed I can skip the foundation and concealer when I use it regularly.

Obviously it depends on the job--both for hiring and what happens after that point. She'd better do a little research on what is expected in her field, and, more importantly, any specific companies she gets an interview for.
She doesn't yet have a job, so the time for some big protest against any perceived unfairness is not now.

I've wondered if Cindy's stuff worked. Good to know!
Oh my goodness, yes it does. If you ever order, let me know and I can walk you through what all the products do. There are a lot and it's intimidating.

I'd rather wear a little makeup than a tie any day. Not everything is comparable to men. Also, you don't have to wear heels. There are tons of cute flats.

When Husker shows up in his high heels wearing a bra and sporting makeup that's when I'll take fashion advice from some guy living in Nebraska who obviously has some kind of Madonna complex. Either we're whores (****holsters) or we're wearing heels and makeup while cooking dinner and making sure we don't tempt him too much because he is a guy after all...lolololol

Well, he IS the expert on everything...
flan
Well, that is true.

My wife has several pairs of those. 5" heels on them.

Don't worry, you are not "tempting".
