DEAR ABBY: Our waitress in a mid-level chain restaurant was friendly and helpful, but her tongue was pierced with a stud. It impaired her speech, making her hard to understand and it was visible every time she spoke.
We are pretty liberal about most things, but it was difficult for us to enjoy our meal. Would it have been OK for us to ask for a different waitress? -- PUT OFF IN TENNESSEE
DEAR PUT OFF: Yes. If you preferred that another server help you, it was within your rights to ask for one or ask to be moved to a table in another section of the restaurant.
No kidding.....I'm not a fan of pierced tongues but I doubt it would have made it difficult to enjoy my meal. And seriously needing to contact Abby after the fact??

It probably wouldn't have made my meal not enjoyable, but I understand her frustration. There are a few girls around here with tongue rings and they are hard to understand. They cant seem to form some words. And the stud clicks against their teeth. And they always seem to have to twist their mouths and tongues in weird positions to even talk.
I would have asked for a different table. Sorry, it you cannot communicate because of something that is easily remedied, then I am not going to deal with you.

20 years ago it was people with tatoos, now it's people with piercings. 40 years ago it was rock and roll and Elvis the Pelvis. I just see a bunch of old people yelling about youngsters. It didn't ruin the effin meal.
And I say that as a person who doesn't "get" piercing. But I do get youngsters. Shake your head, eat your meal and quit being so dramatic.

It's not aesthetics like tattoos and nose rings. It's the fact that I can't understand many people with tongue rings. If it disables your ability to communicate, then I'm not going to deal with you.

Oh, and old people click their dentures and I can't understand them...ruins my day. <crying>
That's rarely a choice. They have to have dentures to function. A tongue ring, nope. Take it out, or I won't deal with you. I've told several girls this. They take them out.

I work in the music industry. It's a popular fad right now. And yes, you can just take them out. They don't even wear them every day. And now they don't wear them when talking to me...

Wash your hands thoroughly before removing your tongue ring to prevent germs from transferring from you hands to your mouth.
2 •
Stick your tongue out as far as you can and grab the bottom ball/bead of your tongue ring. Stand in front of a mirror in order to get a better view of what you are doing.
3 •
Grab the top ball/bead of the tongue ring while still holding the bottom to make sure you have a good grip.
4 •
Twist the bottom ball/bead counter-clockwise until it is completely unscrewed. If necessary, dry the tongue ring with a towel to get a good grip.
5 •
Pull up on the jewelry until it is completely removed from your tongue. Be gentle so the threads on the jewelry do not scrape your tongue.
•Brush the tongue ring with your toothbrush or wash it with soap and water if you plan on wearing it again.

LOL Seems he did. He told his mother what I had said. She agreed with me. And he knew he'd be screwed if he lost his job.

Actually, I wonder why O4 doesn't have "I'm in the music industry" as her signature. Then she wouldn't have to remind me of that 20 times a week. Plus it would give her credibility.

You seem to forget that. I will put it in my signature so you won't forget again...

Oh, I remember. I always thought you were too drunk to remember you told me that. You know how drunks repeat themselves....
Nah...I don't drink during the day. But now it's my tagline, so when your memory fails, aaagggaaaiiinnnn, you can look at it. Hopefully, one day, it will stick. I won't hold my breath.

In the restaurant world that I have been in, tongue rings and tattoos were a big no no. It is different in each company, but a tongue ring was never accepted.
Of course things do change.
And yes, You can just take them out. It may grow up before you put it back in, but you can just take them out.
Personally, I avoid talking to people with tongue rings and those big ear gages. They make me gag. It's involuntary. I cant control it. Seeing it makes me gag.

Why does it have to stick? Is it important?

I don't get piercing or tattoos. I think the ear gauges are ugly and don't get why someone would want floppy, stretched out ear lobes. However, I did see one guy with large ear gauges that were really cool - they had a frog on a swing in the "space" (I don't know what it's called) of the gauge.
<sigh> if you want to pierce various body parts, hang rings from them, put washers in them, paint them, tattoo them, etc--do it at home--DO NOT expect to interact with our customers / clients with any of that nonsense visible

Tattoos, for me, are visual reminders of the things I hold dear.

This. Restaurants are in the business of protecting people's appetites and not grossing them out.
I don't mind tattoos. But I find tongue piercings disgusting, and they have no place in the mouths of waitstaff.
Same with those gross earplug things.

Why, yes, yes it is. It goes to show that I obviously know much more than you about certain things. Removal of tongue rings being the most recent topic of discussion.

Honestly, I'm tired of people who can't make decisions.
Right?! When did every life even become such a dramatic tale of woe ? You waitress has a tongue ring. Get over it. What if she had a cleft lip or palate and you couldn't understand her? You would deal. So DEAL! Yes, I understand a ring is a choice...but it isn't your choice...so get over it. It isn't a big deal.

Nope. I won't deal. I won't conduct business with someone with a tongue ring whom I can't understand and who talks with their mouth all screwed up because of a ring. Take it out if you want to talk to me, otherwise, I will deal with someone else.

What does your HR dept have to say about this? Unless they are breaking an HR code I don't see how you can tell a co-worker to take a piece of jewelry off.
I think businesses need to have it spelled out exactly what is acceptable and what isn't.
Every where I have worked it was laid out in plain black and white.
A plain wedding band for either guys or girls. Single, post ear rings no bigger than a certain circumference. A watch may be worn but it cant come in contact with any food.
When I was in retail it was about the same there too. They didn't want anything catching on clothes.
One place I worked let people wear pretty much anything. It was nice being able to wear my chunky jewelry but I ended up messing it up more than not. So I stopped.

I suspect that she's such a big deal, HR bows down to her and allows her to bully clients, co workers and others in the music industry. They probably thank her. Those who wear heels are fortunate she deigns to speak to them without insisting they put flats on first. Oh the humanity!

No they dont. I'm straight up calling shenanigans. You can't just take them out!
????? Uh, YES you can. They are simple bars with a ball at one end and a screw on ball at the other. My sister had one - she played with it and took it out all the time.

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.
I know someone who had to go to the ER to have one removed. They had to sedate her and cut it out. Why? Because it got so infected it swelled up over the piercing. It was disgusting and stunk. I don't see why anyone would want to do that to them selves.

Google taking out tongue rings. Some folks have had to go to the er to get them out. Some people need to use pliers.
I should have said "some people can't just take them out". That's more accurate.
And this is a general response, not responding to anyone specific.
Then something was wrong.
My ex FEX would have had to have to go to a doctor to get her nose ring out. Some piercing places "weld" the ring in. That is disgusting. FEX could not participate in sports if she didn't remove the piercings. It went downhill from there as you all know...

Oh piercings. When I worked in the hospital I got to see a lot of piercings gone bad. I saw two amputated boobs because of bad nipple rings. And you really shouldn't get your tw@t pierced if you're not going to wash.

We sometimes have to various piercings off people who don't understand "remove all jewelry before surgery". Metal on someone is bad if the electrosurgical unit is being used. Nice conductor. I hate talking to people who can't handle the piercing. Some can talk just fine.
