It annoys me when people have tongue piercings and they constantly click them against their teeth. I used to work with another nurse who had a tongue piercing and she'd do this. We'd sit at the desk and chart and she'd be doing this click click click click click thing. Drove me nuts.

Right?! When did every life even become such a dramatic tale of woe ? You waitress has a tongue ring. Get over it. What if she had a cleft lip or palate and you couldn't understand her? You would deal. So DEAL! Yes, I understand a ring is a choice...but it isn't your choice...so get over it. It isn't a big deal.

Nope.  I won't deal.  I won't conduct business with someone with a tongue ring whom I can't understand and who talks with their mouth all screwed up because of a ring. Take it out if you want to talk to me, otherwise, I will deal with someone else.

What does your HR dept have to say about this?  Unless they are breaking an HR code I don't see how you can tell a co-worker to take a piece of jewelry off.

It's never come up.

Oh, come on, that's pathetic. You CAN'T understand them with a tongue ring in?  Tongue rings were huge on my college campus, and I never had a problem understanding a classmate because of it.  When they clicked them against their teeth it was annoying, but not nearly as annoying as cracking knuckles or continuous throat clearing. You can't understand someone with a ring?  I don't buy it, you are just being fussy.

Nor should you get a "Prince Albert", if you aren't going to wash.

Back to the OP: I would have just asked to change tables or waitresses.

Someone up thread brought up what if it was a cleft palette? That's not a choice, I'll deal with someone with that issue. Tongue stud? That's a choice, and if I can't understand what you are saying, it's not worth it to me to figure it out if you care so little about what you say that you intentionally choose to make it harder to be understood

I just find them nauseating - which is not something I should have to look at when I'm eating.

I find those ear gauges gross. And even worse when they don't have them in and have a huge hole in their earlobe. It kind of screams to the world "look at my priorities" which are not to focus on my career, lol.

I mean, I generally don't care. Tattoos and stuff like that doesn't bother me. The stud in the nose is kind of gross because you would have to put your finger up your nose to remove it, lol.

At least with a tongue ring, you can take it out. Those earplug things mutilate you for life. What do you do if you want to take it out after you've stretched your ear to the size of a small donut?

I guess the lady that wrote the OP was just being fussy too?  Meh...I can be "fussy" all I want.   I'm not going to try to decipher your speech because you choose to be an idiot. I'll spend my money elsewhere, TYVM...

DS2 did those gauges several years ago...because GF wanted them to do it together...Gag me with a spoon...

I bit my tongue.

Luckily, they didn't go very big & his earlobe grew back together once he took them out.

I mean, old people grow earlobes quite well.  Why do you want to look older than you are?

I just did some research. When you get pierced, you can't remove the ring for the first 2-3 months until it is healed. Also, you should not leave the ring out for more than a few hours without putting the spacer in.

I am guessing the waitress in the OP just had her piercing done and that's why she was not speaking clearly. It's more difficult to speak clearly in the first few days and weeks when the tongue is swollen and the mouth is still healing.

Then she shouldn't have a job that requires her to talk to customers.  The manager should have told her to take it out or leave.   She is incapable of doing her job well.
