Insurance doesn't cover the damage they cause. I never said I was well off. I just shouldn't have to pay for damage other peoples religious beliefs causes.

I know this was written in jest but the Amish don't have stuff like buggy insurance.  If their buggy is destroyed by say, a car running into it, the community comes together and builds them another one.

And just for the record, cars have caused many accidents with Amish buggies.  People in cars do this strange thing called texting while driving.  They don't pay attention and in Amish country it is a big danger for the Amish.

Oh, and another thing.  If you have an accident with an Amish person's buggy and kill their family they don't press charges.

Well, I was just relating MY experiences with the Amish people. They have always been friendly and nice. And honestly? Some of what they preach has some real honest to god truth to it. Do I want to run off and be Amish? No. But I can appreciate their lifestyle.

I remember when the Amish schoolhouse was attacked & several children were killed. The families of the slain kids prayed for the shooter...Not sure I could do that.

Do you remember when that guy shot all those amish children? The community forgave him. I'm going to post the article. Of course I'll be vetting it from the internet so it's accuracy is suspect.

Amish community response
On the day of the shooting, a grandfather of one of the murdered Amish girls was heard warning some young relatives not to hate the killer, saying, "We must not think evil of this man."[15] Another Amish father noted, "He had a mother and a wife and a soul and now he's standing before a just God."[16] Jack Meyer, a member of the Brethren community living near the Amish in Lancaster County, explained: "I don't think there's anybody here that wants to do anything but forgive and not only reach out to those who have suffered a loss in that way but to reach out to the family of the man who committed these acts."[15]

A Roberts family spokesman said an Amish neighbor comforted the Roberts family hours after the shooting and extended forgiveness to them.[17] Amish community members visited and comforted Roberts' widow, parents, and parents-in-law. One Amish man held Roberts' sobbing father in his arms, reportedly for as long as an hour, to comfort him.[18] The Amish have also set up a charitable fund for the family of the shooter.[19] About 30 members of the Amish community attended Roberts' funeral,[18] and Marie Roberts, the widow of the killer, was one of the few outsiders invited to the funeral of one of the victims.[20]

Marie Roberts wrote an open letter to her Amish neighbors thanking them for their forgiveness, grace, and mercy. She wrote, "Your love for our family has helped to provide the healing we so desperately need. Gifts you've given have touched our hearts in a way no words can describe. Your compassion has reached beyond our family, beyond our community, and is changing our world, and for this we sincerely thank you."[20] The Amish do not normally accept charity, but due to the extreme nature of the tragedy, donations were accepted. Richie Lauer, director of the Anabaptist Foundation, said the Amish community, whose religious beliefs prohibit them from having health insurance, will likely use the donations to help pay the medical costs of the hospitalized children.[21]

Some commentators criticized the quick and complete forgiveness with which the Amish responded, arguing that forgiveness is inappropriate when no remorse has been expressed, and that such an attitude runs the risk of denying the existence of evil,[22][23][24] while others were supportive.[25][26] Donald Kraybill and two other scholars of Amish life noted that "letting go of grudges" is a deeply rooted value in Amish culture, which remembers forgiving martyrs including Dirk Willems and Jesus himself. They explained that the Amish willingness to forgo vengeance does not undo the tragedy or pardon the wrong, but rather constitutes a first step toward a future that is more hopeful.[27][28]

It's weird because I just watched a documentary on texting and driving. There were many cases of people outside of the Amish community texting and driving and killing Amish people in buggies. I actually cried because one young man ran into an Amish buggy and killed the wife and five kids. The husband wrote him a letter forgiving him and telling him that god works in strange ways. He said he had found peace and hoped the young man would also find peace. He wished the young man a good future with his wife and infant daughter. I guess it's hard for me to understand someone so at peace with what they believe in that they wouldn't want justice.

They are friendly and nice. I totally agree with that.

And there are many different sects of Amish. But they all have one thing in common and it is their basic tenets of not wanting government involvement in their lives. Unless of course they want it...in that case it is ok.

Right. And again, the amish don't have the corner on that market. Hell, a lot of people with political leanings opposite of mine are that way as well. Hypocrisy is alive and well in America.

Why does hypocrisy garner such anger? It makes no sense to me. It's this huge insult but it's like calling someone a liar. People lie. People are hypocritical.

Agreed. But look at the animosity it created here when we just pointed out what we have experienced! Many have told us it could not possibly be true, it could not be the Amish that we saw, we must have misinterpreted the situations, etc. Yet when we point out the hypocrisy in other situations, people say yes that does happen, we aren't all perfect.

The whole point is not all Amish are perfect and above reproach. Some use that sentiment to market their products.  Some work the system to have the best of both worlds. We are trying to tell all of you that may not have had direct dealings with them, that they are not all to be painted with the "perfect" brush. It's that simple. Yet that has somehow become construed as hate speech and bashing. It baffling to me.

Well, Christ wasn't too fond of Hypocrites.  However, I would say that all human beings are hypocrites pretty much about something.

You said (paraphrased)  ALL of them want the government out of their business until they want something FROM the government.  That is what you said.  You said ALL of them are like that.  My ONLY problem with this statement is the ALL part.  I do not believe for one moment that ALL of them are like that.  Do I believe what you say about the Amish people YOU know?  Absolutely.  I don't discount YOUR experiences.  But your experiences are not ALL Amish people.  I have had my own experiences.  They have been good.  Please don't use such a broad brush.

I am curious how many Amish people are on welfare as opposed to say, other religions?  Or just the general population.  How many Amish welfare recipients are there percentage wide as a whole?  I am seriously curious about this.

Why does it matter? The rest of us PAY taxes that supposedly are part of the entitlement benefits. If they eschew them and haven't paid in and their sons don't have to lay down their lives on the battlefield, why should even one of them get it?

Yes, all Amish eschew government involvement. That's what makes them Amish. That's like saying you are a Christian but don't believe in Jesus. That's the very core of the Amish belief.

I think you are having a reading comprehension problem.   It doesn't matter how many Amish get benefits because they haven't paid into the system.  And, many generations of Americans have served and laid down their lives, and they haven't, yet they reap the rewards of freedom and this government.

One son registered. He will never be drafted. He is disabled. Legally. They will not take him. The other son was not required to register. There are reasons and I will not share them here because they are too personal.

Yes.  That's exactly what I am saying.  One son registered but in the event of a draft, which is not right now, he will not be drafted.  EVER.  The other son is not required to be registered.  I know you are familiar with the reasons.  Yes, SS will have to register when he is 18 given no changes.

I am continually amazed by all the Christians who, when confronted with bad behavior, say "I'm imperfect. I'm human. I'll never be able to act in a perfectly godly manner." They say they all make mistakes. Some have fallen away from Christ. Some don't follow the Bible any longer. Some follow a DIFFERENT Bible. And yet, we expect the Amish to be perfect. To live above and beyond. To never make mistakes. To never lie, cheat, or steal. It's perfectly okay for a Christian to cheat on their taxes because they are imperfect. They make mistakes. But burn the Amish at the stake.

My boys will both register.

Neither will ever be called to serve.

One is autistic and the other is completely blind in one eye.

But they will do what is required of them.

If we constantly look at what others do and don't do and constantly compare the "fairness" of it all, we will be in a constant state of disappointment.
