Mine is redneck today. Beanie wienies, cheese sandwich and corn chips. I even have grape soda to wash it down.

Now if I only had a moon pie!

We never really do lunch. For dinner we will probably have leftovers.

We do lunch of some kind.

Even if it is just some fruit and crackers.

Dinner is Chinese from a local place. I hope it is good and doesn't make me sick.

We rarely ever eat out.  Eating out is expensive.  I don't understand how people can eat out so much and then claim they don't have a lot of money.  Well, I guess that does explain it.

Well this was more than I thought it was going to be. But we cook more than we eat out.

And it is already swelling up and making me gross.

There is a good place on Eisenhower.  Right across from toys r us. It's in a building that used to be circuit city. It's called Sakura, good variety usually but it was really busy so they were going through the sushi as fast as they made it. They have a ton of other food too.

Yeah, I hear that kind of thing all the time. People cry poor and then talk about stopping here for dinner and then somewhere else the next day. If that's how you want to spend your money, fine by me. But don't whine about not having any then.

I hear the same thing about the groceries too.  People say I can't afford to eat on such and such a budget anymore.  But then you look at what they buy and it's all prepackaged dinners, frozen pizza's, ice cream, and the such.  I went to the store the other day and the cheapest store brand of ice cream was a little over four bucks a half gallon.  I just wouldn't buy that if I was trying to stretch my bucks.  It's amazing what you can cook for next to pennies when you pull out all the ingredients.  And by ingredients I mean flour, sugar, butter, and that kind of stuff.  Opening a can or a box is not cooking from "scratch".

It sure isn't ! All those things in the ingredient list can't be good for you either. I don't eat perfectly every day, but I try to make sure that when I cook, I cook from the ground up. I don't use anything in a recipe that has its own ingredient list.

I know right!  I love to cook.  I guess I'm lucky.

DH and I are on a very tight budget right now.  But we do go to Starbucks twice a month.  We've stopped eating out, we don't prepared foods.  It's our one splurge.

This drives me bonkers.  My clients do this all the time - so much whining because of money, and then they go hog-wild at Starbucks.  I keep a list of those that do that so that I can make sure that the scholarship money goes elsewhere.

DD and I eat out too much. I can afford it but I hate adding up what I spend. Also, I'm gaining weight. I know eating out adds a lot more calories than home made. I feel all that sodium in my joints. I feel gross.

At one point in my life I had a $300/month Starbucks habit. No lie. One Venti is at least $5. I would stop on the way to work and the way home. Sometimes I'd even get one at lunch. It was very easy to run up that bill.

 The sammiches are good too!

It adds up though. People don't realize how fast. Especially if your budget is tight and you need to stretch your dollars. It can make the difference between now being able to pay the bills and being able to.

Amen on that.  I don't think poor people need to not ever go anywhere.  I think a treat once in awhile is fair.  No one needs to live without the occasional splurge.  But that's what it should be.  If you are on a budget you shouldn't be "splurging" every other day.

Exactly! And when you are on a budget, splurging once in awhile makes you feel like you aren't depriving yourself. Easier to stick to the budget that way.

I'm not one of those heartless bastards who think people on welfare shouldn't have a treat now and then. I just think if your whole grocery cart is filled with soda, frozen dinners, ice cream, and box dinners then you need to rethink your shopping. Yes, deli cakes are delicious, but a box mix will do just as well and is a fraction of the cost.

Almost everything at the bakery can be duplicated. People say it doesn't taste as good but that's because it's the same principle as eating mom's cooking. It's always better when someone else cooks it!

A simple thread on having beanie weenies for lunch becomes a serious discussion about food prep and the poor.

We go to dinner after church on Sat. night. We're going to the club later to treat my parents to lunch for all the babysitting they've been doing. Dining out is one area where one may cut back if things are tight, or if they want to save up for something special.

Beanie weanies sound good. That's one of my husband's favorite meals. I'll have to make it some time. I think the boys would eat it, although I'd probably have to serve the dogs separate from the beans for them.

Lots of people do brunch here after church. It's really hard to get in anywhere. A bunch flock to the hospital after church too. I don't get the appeal, but it's the same people every week.

One $5 coffee drink per day, over a year costs $1825.

I bought a Cuisinart Burr Grind n Brew ($150, cost recovery, 1 month).  Beans from Costco run me about $6 a lb.  A 12 cup pot costs me about $1.07 (at my preferred brew strength)  I get a great cup of joe, and save $1285 over the cost of the first year, $1435. the second year.

With the savings, you can afford a steamer/frother!

Our hospital cafeteria is pretty good. They do a good business everyday. I know all the offices around it will use it at some point during the week.

On Sunday, a lot of church people use that day to visit those in the hospital. So lunch there only makes sense.

I LOVE really good hot chocolate.

Steamed milk is just warm milk. The milk gets hot enough to turn to foam. The foam is the best part.

Personal tastes.

Let me ask. How does one order Chinese and not get everything from the kitchen in it?

We have a ton left over.

Funny story.

Told C when she ordered something for me, I didn't want broccoli. It has become painful for me. I avoid it.

So they asked what I would like instead. she said snow peas. Now I do like crisp snow peas.

But good Lord. The amount of the snow peas in this plate is incredible. So many of them that it is actually comical. It's like a bowl full of snow peas with a few carrot pieces and some beef as an after thought.

I changed my mind.

I decided to make a vanilla cream and blueberry cake.

And I used both a box mix AND vanilla pudding mix.

Judge away. I don't care.

We stopped at a family restaurant that used to be near us before there was a fire. I had a Southern style benedict. Fluffy biscuit topped with ham, a poached egg and sausage gravy. Extra crispy home fries. Right before the waitress brought out our order, I heard the kitchen tell the staff they were out of sausage gravy. My plate was the last of it.

SCORE!!

The last of the gravy is usually the best. Glad you got it.

My cake is pretty good. Nice and fluffy. The boys like it. It isn't super sweet like I thought it would be. I think the blueberries take it down a bit from being really sweet.

I'll make it again.
