I see nothing wrong with public places expecting people to supervise and control their children.
I don't either.
But then again we have also seen the posts when a parent actually parents a child. That isn't approved of either.
I mean how dare they correct their kid like that.
If a child wallops their kid in my library, yes, I will ask them to leave.
LL, it's a fine line. Think of the other patrons: if we seem overly critical, that doesn't help.
Have you EVER spoken to a parent whose child needs correction? You may as well light a fire and throw gasoline on it. We choose our battles, if you will.
We have a train table, a kitchen and a workbench and puzzles, just off the top of my head.

So there is a play area that encourages behavior NOT appropriate for the library. That doesn't sound like a winning idea.
I can see an area to explore. A place to draw and encourage quiet play.
Sorry. Doesn't make much sense to me.
That doesn't surprise me.
I have worked in public libraries for 34 years. I have never met a librarian who wore her hair in a bun, wore glasses and said: "Shhhh!"
Our children's area is large, with books, DVD's, computers, activities (like a large checkers game from Cracker Barrel), couches, and a huge play area. It is designed to be welcoming, to make people want to come back again & again. Even in the cold weather, moms bring their kids so they can have a change of scenery. People come from all over the county, even though their home library is much closer. People also come from other counties.
flan
No. It doesn't make much sense. Why would you put what is basically a playground in a library and then complain when kids play and parents let them?
That is like complaining because the dog pissed on the carpet because you didn't let it out.
A library is a place for quiet, peace. Reading, enjoying a good book. little kids can do the same thing. But if you put a book in the middle of a playground, they are goig to ignore the book and play.
I may not have a college degree. But I know a bad idea when I see it. And I know a created reason to complain when I see it.
But whatever. Complain about the kids playing on the playground. I mean in the library. And then complain because the parents either will or wont make them behave.
I see a pattern.

Why yes. I have.
Pulled a 2 year old out of huge picture window once. Handed them to their parents and told them to not let them back up there again.
Also caught a kid as it scooted through the kitchen door once. Parents had no idea where that kid was. Announced over the speaker system for the parents to come get their child. Everyone was watching them. They were embarrassed but what else are they going to do? Raise cane with me. I had their child on the back side of the counter and they had no idea.
Followed a kid through the dinning room with a cup full of coke and spilling it every where with a mop and when he got to his parents I asked them if they allowed that at home.
And yes. It was a restaurant. But I still had others in there who paid a right nice price for a decent meal and place to eat it in peace.
I made sure they did.
Putting a playground in a library and expecting library behavior is ridiculous.

We are warming up a bit. Thankfully we didn't get anything more than a flurry or two.

Lily, seriously, kids can play quietly. Have you even been in a library in the last 20 years? It's when they are running around getting into things they shouldn't, like flipping the switch on and off on a $5,000 printer 5 feet away from her loser father that was totally ignoring her or a kid who is clearly tired, screaming bloody murder while parent just ignores them. That causes the issues Flan and I occasionally complain about. Your post just shows how out of touch you are with current libraries. You probably don't even frequent one often enough to even know what you are talking about.
Do you know what year this is? A PUBLIC library is NOT a place for "quiet." Some libraries DO have quiet areas, but it's NOT where kids hang out. A college library is.
Seriously, where do you think library supporters come from? You start when they are kids. You teach them that librarians are friendly and helpful, but they will remind them of basic safety rules.
I really am lucky to work where I do. We remodeled last year, and I don't think I have heard one complaint. We get compliments daily, even though we re-opened in June.
We have a great children's area also and we have daycares come in (we even open just for one daycare on Thursday mornings for an hour)and moms who just come to visit and let their kids play and pick out books. Way different than it was a few years ago. People really do appreciate it. It's true when they say libraries are community gathering places.

Our library stinks. They don't offer a lot for the community and have limited hours. The homeless people like to hang out there int he winter to keep warm.

Have you seen or hard of the chickenflage at Zaxby's?
I am thinking I want one of the cups. I have no idea why.

It was supposed to freeze today. Never happened. Got really cool and that's all.

Why do people complain about what school officials do when it comes to weather and closing?
If they close then someone complains they shouldn't have. If they go then someone complains the shouldnt have.
No one knows how bad a possible snow storm can be. It could be horrible or it could be nothing.
Like when the Mayor of NY closed everything down because of the possible snow storm and people got all upset cause it didn't happen. Now if he hadn't closed things down and it had hit, those some exact people would be upset and calling for his resignation.

OMFG, I spent the past couple of hours snowblowing, when I got done with the driveway, I did the walkway. DD had shoveled the steps prior. Well apparently she tossed the rubber welcome mat on to the walkway because it was in her way, by the time I snowblowed the walkway the mat was covered with snow so I didn't see it. Guess what got wound around the blades and rendered the snowblower dead? Yep. I called DD outside (impressed I didn't yell or kill her) and explained what happened, together we cut, pulled, pushed that rubber out, it took a good 45 minutes! I have to say, she is one smart cookie figuring out which way we had to pull or cut next. I am done, and I mean DONE with this weather.
Guess who decided to start shoveling his driveway just as I went out to snow blow?

It's 23 degrees here now, and I shoveled the 4 inches of snow that fell this afternoon.
Want to trade?
No thank you. I'm sure ya'll will be as sick of hearing me complain about the heat this summer.

Putting up with bratty, unruly children whose parents won't watch them is not evolving. I'm quite sure if they are bothering you they are bothering other patrons.

I don't think that was what she meant. I think she was referring to libraries changing with the times. No matter what, there will always be idiots who will let their kids get into things and scream. At least libraries aren't stuffy places where you can't make a sound at all, anymore.

That would be better than having screaming children running around without parental supervision - at least you could do the librarian stare and tell them to hush or leave.

If they do get out of hand we do say something. The 2 1/2 year old that was messing with our printer and caused us to have to call a repairman to fix it, we told her father what happened and told him he had to watch her if he brought her in. Haven't had a problem since.
There is normal conversation level, then there is too loud. We do address people who are too loud - usually kids. Most people are pretty good about it but there are the 1 or 2 families who make people miserable.

Don't have to shovel heat and it doesn't make cars slide and crash into each other.
No. But one good rain and everyone is driving like maniac and crashing into each other.

I stopped him from running. Problem was solved. Kids have lots of energy.
If you want to open a library where no one is permitted to talk, go right ahead.
