DEAR MISS MANNERS: I realize we lead a technology-filled life, with cellphones, laptops and so forth. However, lately I have received text messages as invitations to baby showers and birthday parties.
I refuse to attend a party given by someone who does not even have the time to send out proper invitations. Am I being old-fashioned, or am I correct to assume there should be etiquette where proper invitations are concerned?
GENTLE READER: The choice you offer implies that the old-fashioned should necessarily give way, a premise with which Miss Manners does not concur. She agrees that to be taken seriously, an invitation should be issued in a dignified manner. And she also recognizes that there are those who will therefore judge her to be old-fashioned.
So how is it that you might also catch her texting? Or overlooking someone's failure to issue proper invitations? Put that down to two other old-fashioned values: appreciating others' convenience, and overlooking their lapses.
When I was at neice's baby shower someone in another state sent a mass text telling people to go to her sister's baby shower because no one was there and she needed presents.
I despise getting told to visit people's go fund me accounts.
This is a thing???
flan
Yes! And usually it's to fund something that could have been avoided if they had been a little more responsible. Sorry, not paying because you make bad decisions.
So can I just ask you guys for money & you'll send it to me?
flan
well in theory. But we are too cheap to give YOU money.
gofund me is a website where people tell their sad story and you can donate through the website. Some situations are indeed awesome to donate to but others are just money grabs.

Well, why would anyone even believe these GoFundMe stories? I mean, how do you know they aren't scams? How about donating money to your local foodbank instead?
You want to invite me to a birthday party, baby shower or wedding? It better come in the mail or I will disregard it.
Proper is on an invitation sent through the mail.
Sorry but that is the way it is.
I don't consider them real invites through text or FB.
If you send me a virtual invite, you may get a virtual gift.
Want something real. Then send a real invitation.
Does that make me old fashioned? I don't care.

If you want to disregard invites, then don't go. Who cares?
And that is just it.
If the person inviting me doesn't care enough to properly invite me, then who cares if I am there or not? So I don't go.
People have gotten so lazy. Not all progression is good.

See, you are the one ASSUMING, they "don't care enough" and deciding what their motives are. So, go ahead. Most of the time the "motive" is just, Oh, I will send out a text. So, if you want to sit around and dissect everyone's "motives" and of course decide that their motives are rude, impure or whatever, then knock yourself out!

I've donated to GoFundMe a couple of times. But I know the people and the circumstances. Its an easy way to raise money. I would think people just don't browse through the GoFundMe site and donate for the hell of it...

I remember the first time I received an e-vite. I wasn't sure whether I wanted to bother to respond, but did, and attended the party. The party was well thought out, well planned, and very nice. If I had been a snob or stuck to my old-fashioned idea of a "proper" invite, I would have missed out on a lovely evening.
Whether to accept or decline should be based on whether you want to get yourself out of the house and socialize. Or whether you enjoy the company of the host and anticipated guests. There are some e-vites that I would decline, because I know from experience with that particular circle, that I would not enjoy myself, even though I enjoy the host. There are some people I enjoy but know they throw bad parties.
I think that if party invitations were sent electronically, this would make electronic "thank you" notes acceptable. A win-win.
So if you send me a virtual invite to your birthday party then you are ok if I send you a virtual sweater right?
Why not just Skype the party. Then everyone can "make their appearance" and be done in less than 10 minutes. Wont even have to put on pants.
Sorry. Proper doesn't change.

I don't mind evites - it's a good tool. But a text is not evites, and is usually lacking in information. If someone texts me - I respond back - I'll look forward to the invitation.

Just because you don't change doesn't mean the rest of the world doesn't.
Just because you change doesn't mean the rest of the world has to.
Who said anything about "you" changing. Maybe to "you" this is normal and all you know. Kind of like cursive. Traditionally, all correspondence was written in cursive and to print was a BIG no-no. Now, they don't even teach kids cursive.

Which is stupid. All historical documents that were handwritten were in cursive. Finding letters in the attic from your aunt, they won't even be able to read them.

I don't disagree, but you can't expect people to learn a new style of writing just because you deem it "proper". Times change.

It's not a new style of writing.

To them it is.

It shouldn't be, b/c I bet that's what their grandparents and their parents write in.

And they probably can't read it. They don't care anyway, they want to get texts. I would never send someone a message in a way that they couldn't understand.

My in-laws send the girls written cards. DD10's godmother sends her hand-written letters. DD10 can read cursive - she was actually given a very short course of it in school, and then we worked on it at home. But the school didn't grade it or anything, it was just something they covered briefly.

I probably wont send Sweetness anything in cursive. And she probably won't learn it from her parents. DD has never written in cursive, (although she was taught how).

I weep when I hear they aren't teaching cursive anymore.
flan
Or spelling. YOu know, since they will never work without spell check. Brilliant, right?
Not the word I would use...LOL!
Children need to learn cursive & spelling.
flan
Well, that is getting pushed aside for computer skills, which they do need. So, I guess teaching them cursive falls to the parents now. And spelling. Although - DD10's friends who attend private school still focus on spelling.

Agreed. I can do my job without ever picking up a pen or pencil. When we bought our house, 90% of the paperwork was submitted with digital signatures, and pretty soon, I think all will be done with digital signatures.

If someone sent me a text inviting me to dinner, sure that's fine. But a more formal occasion deserves a more formal invite. The evites are fine, however if you use evite, you should follow up in some other manner to make sure the person actually received it. Oh and if you don't, don't get mad if people don't RSVP, the smaller amount of thought you put into invitations will lead to others not really taking the invite seriously.
