Dear Abby: I Don't Like Pet Visitors!

DEAR ABBY: My adult son and his wife have had a dog for two years. I do not want a dog in my house, but I also don't want to prevent them from visiting (they live six hours away). We have tried keeping "Puddles" in the basement, but she whined all night, and my son ended up sleeping on the basement floor with her.

They think I'm going to give in because she's so cute, but I don't like little animals running, jumping and yapping. (OK, I'm high-strung, and holidays make it worse.) My husband doesn't support me and tries to sneak Puddles in when I'm not looking.

This is not fair! I'm the one who keeps the house nice, but I love my son. Any suggestions? -- PARTICULAR IN OHIO

DEAR PARTICULAR: Yes, your son should find a pet sitter or board Puddles for the time when he visits you. And if necessary, offer to pay for it. That way the poor animal won't be isolated in unfamiliar surroundings and will have companionship, you'll have peace of mind and your son will get a good night's sleep.

Isn't it her husband's house, too? And he doesn't care. If she had his support, I'd have to back her up, but, she is just being mean.

I agree with the pet sitter or board the dog advice.

Most people who don't have an animal, don't want someone else's in their house either.

That has been my experience.

I have pets and I hate it when my brother brings his dogs. They stay out side but it sets my dogs off every time they do anything.

It may be both their house, but it's a dog. If one doesn't want a dog in the house, it shouldn't be in the house.

I love my dogs. But I wouldn't take them to another person's house. Especially if they didn't want them there.

Find a housesitter, so the dog can stay in its own home.

Her son should bring a sleeping bag, and plan on having his dog within reach the whole time.

A two year old dog in a strange place needs as much attention as a two year old human, and since that means Son sleeps in the basement, so be it.

A 6 foot leash would be good.

If someone tried to bring an animal into my house, they'd be sleeping elsewhere.  Period.    Call me mean, but cleanliness and our health come first over someone's inability to tear themselves away from their mutt.

When I had my dog I would always board or get a sitter for her when we traveled. I would never dream of bringing my dog to someone else's home.

Yeah, I'm going to agree with the LW. I will not have dogs in my house. Sorry. Find somewhere else to stay...

I'm a dog lover and Pooch travels with me, but if someone doesn't want him in their house we stay at a hotel. LW is totally correct on this one. Husband should be supporting his wife, not doing things that increase her distress around animals.

I have a dog and I don't want others staying here. My dog will start peeing to mark his territory and then the other dog will put his two scents in . My father brought his wife's dog here even after I told him not to. I ended up have to clean a carpet, a sofa, and had to throw away DD's bean bag chairs.

Now - I think the rudest thing in the world is to show up with a dog when you didn't tell the hostess the dog was coming. We had BIL bring a new puppy to our house when our dog was recovering from parvo. Parvo can stay in the environment and yard for at least a month. I was terrified that puppy was going to get it and die.

I don't ever assume my pet is welcome in anyone's home. I have a friend who takes her dog EVERYWHERE. She doesn't understand when I choose to board my pets when going away to visit family.

Sounds like the LW has high standards for her home and its cleanliness (she admits she's "high strung") Sonny boy sleeps on the floor with the dog (in the basement) by way of reproachment (let's guilt Mom into letting Puddles up with FAMILY)

I have a better idea. Find a boarding kennel near the parent's home. The dog can bunk there, and the son and her DH can go visit, walk and play with the dog during the day. Heck, I'll bet if the place has doggie day camp, the dog will have a much better time playing with other dogs than being banished to a dark basement.

I'm on the lw's side, she has the right to refuse the dog and her husband should be baking her up.

Its one thing if you visit someone, and include your pet, WHEN THEY ARE EXPECTING YOU, and welcome the pet! Its entirely different if someone says NO, keep your pet at home! And since it is the LW's parents' home, he should KNOW better! Shame on him!

I feel about my dog the way I feel about kids - I like mine, but that doesn't mean I like yours automatically.

People have a right to NOT have animals in their home. I agree with the OP. Has she told the son her dog is unwelcome clearly? Or is she being wishe washy about the way she sends the message?

I'm sure she's the one that does the cleaning.  If that dog pees on the floor, its on her to get it fixed up.

I love our dog in our house, but I would never take him with us on a trip. Especially one that is six hours long. DS needs to board his precious and give his mom the respect she is due.
Sounds like an entitled POS to me. (the son)

My EXes SIL use to bring her purse dog over all the time and just let it on the furniture. Drove me nuts. We got into it a few times. She only fed it very specific things. One thanksgiving I gave my cats whipped cream in a bowl on the floor. Of course the dog got some. She flipped out. I told her to keep him on a leash or keep him home if she didn't want him eating the cats stuff.

I had a friend who took her 2 giant Mastiffs everywhere. They were nice dogs but they were huge & the male was a drooler. One time in my living room he shook his head & the trail of drool flew from his face & landed on my crown molding & just hung there. Very disgusting.

You shouldn't expect other people to love your dogs like you do. If it's your house, fine do what you want. But, I don't think you should ever presume that your dogs are welcome. That's why they have kennels, what is the big deal about putting them in the kennel for a few days. My dog loves it, they walk her, give her treats and have a doggy play group.

And, dogs that jump on people are the worst. You don't know if someone has back issues or recently had surgery or something like that and then you have some dog jump on you. If your dog jumps on people, that's on you, at least put the dog in another room while there is company .
