I am sure you have seen the story. The car chase in L.A.

http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-gunman-hospitalized-police-chase-carjack-20150210-story.html

Of all the things the police do, this is one thing that I just do not understand. Not in this day and time. Now I know it doesn't happen in every single chase. But more often than not there is a helicopter in the sky over the fleeing car.

So why doesn't the police just not engage in these dangerous and often times deadly chases? why not just let the helicopter keep them in sight and keep following them but not create a chase situation?

There has to be a better way.

Until you have spent some time in LA you won't understand it. I was there on business a few years ago and the number of criminals speeding away was mind boggling. The police have to protect the public against the dangerous driving, keeping these criminals in sight, even if it means a chase and highways shut down, does protect the public. Walk a mile in their shoes.

I have never seen one on a street that was shut down. It is always in a residential area.

If the bad guys were not being chased, they would slow down. Pay more attention to what is in front of them and not behind them.

Still. Seems like a lot of the crashes and such could be avoided.

Bad guy who are not being tailed  by police on the ground, but suspect they are being tracked by a helicopter, can drive to the airport where the helicopter cannot follow, pull into a parking garage and abandon the car, then just walk away.

Also, some of them do NOT slow down. They enjoy driving like madmen.

I think high speed chases are really dangerous to the public! Why should we risk the lives of innocent bystanders getting killed just to try to catch someone who robbed a convenience store or something? Yes, if they are a dangerous criminal who has been shooting people or something, of courses. But, what are they chasing most of these criminals for? They have the license plate. Do good old fashioned police and detective work and stop endangering the public.
