I cannot agree that choosing NOT to pay for Cobra is irresponsible. Conserving your money to keep your roof over your head and your family fed while you are unemployed is much more important.
But it's a moot point. You have to have coverage whether that be Cobra or ACA.
Yes. And while there are a FEW good things about ACA this is the worst thing about it. The people who need the help most DON'T benefit from it. Rich people can afford their own insurance. Poor people get Medicaid. It's the working poor that can't afford to pay for the insurance or the penalties that come with not paying for it. Some people literally fall through the cracks. I agree that everyone should have insurance but I don't agree in the government forcing it on them. And some people really do have to make the choice between paying the rent and feeding the family or getting Ocare.
Which is why no American should be FORCED to buy anything. It's un-American. If you can't afford car insurance, you can choose not to drive. Being penalized for not being able to afford something is absolutely WRONG.

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.

I totally agree about forcing people to buy things, that is wrong. However we do need to come up with a plan for people caught in the middle; if you don't have insurance and you have a catastrophic illness you can lose everything due to the cost. What should be offered to people is a catastrophic health plan - one that kicks in only for hospitalization, surgeries, etc, not Rx or routine Doc app'ts. I had that when I was at my poorest and working only a few part time jobs when I went back to college. It may not be ideal, but you won't go bankrupt due to a health issue.

What I am afraid is going to happen is there will be an insurance company that offers junk plans and the only thing it is really good for is to keep from being penalized. Like those flighty car insurance plans.
The person still wont have insurance. Still wont be able to see a doctor. It wont be worth the time it takes to auto sign it.

Problem is, Lily, the ACA dictates what the minimum is and what health insurance has to cover. These mandates escalate the cost to people. Example; a 60 women does not need BC / Ob gyn coverage, but must buy it. A 30 YO has to buy some coverage that only an older person needs. It's wrong.
