This is the moment an Indian grandfather was slammed to the ground by a police officer and sent into paralysis.
Newly-released dash-cam footage shows Sureshbhai Patel, 57, being thrown onto the sidewalk in Madison, Alabama, last Friday, just two weeks after he flew to the town from India to visit his 17-month-old grandson.
As Mr Patel undergoes surgery to his vertebrae, and his son files a lawsuit against the department, Madison Police Chief Larry Muncey confirmed Officer Eric Parker, will be fired over the incident.

Action: Officer Eric Parker has been fired over the incident, the department revealed on Thursday
In the footage, released on Thursday, Mr Patel can be seen standing on a sidewalk in Madison with two officers, handcuffed.
After a few moments, one lifts him off the ground and slams his head into the floor.
Despite being lifted up and dusted down, Patel could not stay on his feet - and after two operations no his vertebrae, remains partially paralyzed.
On Thursday Madison police confirmed one of the police officers captured in the footage has been charged with assault and will be fired.
Patel, who doesn't speak English, had only been in the country for two weeks. He had flown to Alabama to help take care of his 17-month-old grandson.
He is being treated in Huntsville Hospital and has limited movement in his right leg but his family fear he may never leave.

The 57-year-old, who had only been in the United States for two weeks, has limited movement in his right leg but his family fears he may never be able to leave the hospital
Two officers initially responded to a complaint a 'suspicious person' was looking in garages around the neighborhood which residents say is usually quiet.
The caller said they did not recognize Mr Patel and claimed he was walking on other people's property.
When they arrived on the scene he said 'no English', and told them his son's house number.
The initial police report claimed Patel resisted arrest, prompting the officers to use brute force.
Apologizing for the incident, Madison Police blamed a 'communication barrier'.

Anger: His son Chirag, who paid for him to fly over from the small Indian village of Pij, said bringing his father over to the US was a dream. He was surprised at the attack as he believes its a good neighborhood
His son Chirag, who paid for him to fly over from the small Indian village of Pij, told AL.com: 'This is a good neighborhood. I didn't expect anything to happen.
'He was just walking on the sidewalk as he does all the time. They put him to the ground.'
'It is a dream for me because I came from a very poor family and I worked so hard here.'
Hank Sherrod, an attorney for the family, told the site: 'This is broad daylight, walking down the street. There is nothing suspicious about Mr. Patel other than he has brown skin.
'This is just one of those things that doesn't need to happen.'
The police statement read: 'The subject began putting his hands in his pockets. Officers attempted to pat the subject down and he attempted to pull away. The subject was forced to the ground, which resulted in injury.'
A GoFundMe account has been set up to help pay for Mr Patel's medical bills. The goal is to reach more than $25,000.

Untouched: The clothes his father had laid out on his bed in preparation for his stay are left folded up
I think this is disgusting. Clearly this older man was not a threat. And the cop had no idea how much harm he was inflicting - very poorly trained. I am just upset that the cop was only charged with assault. If you or I had inflicted this much harm on someone, it would have been attempted murder for sure.
What ever happened to common sense? Trying to solve the problem instead of arresting or killing the problem? He told them "no English" and gave them his son's address. They should have walked him back there and asked the son what was going on.
Shameful.

Are cops not given any training in how to deal with medical issues like people with dementia? Or, mentally ill? Or what about autistic people who are pulled over by cops? What about dealing with intoxicated people, etc? Funny that mental health professionals can manage to deal with all kinds of situations without beating people and slamming them to the ground. It surely seems they could have easily restrained his arms behind his back if needed. By what RIGHT did they have to accost him? Resisting arrest? What the Hell was he being arrested for? Is this Nazi Germany or a communist country where we have to produce papers? They had no right whatsoever. He was breaking no laws. That cop should be tried to for assault, battery and attempted murder.
don't see any other view than excessive use of force--did not see one instant where these officers were threatened--agree with assault and battery--not attempted murder--agree he should be fired AND charged

This is so sad. It should have been a ahppy time for this family & now it is all ruined because of this idot cop. I agree he should stand trial for assault.
Why is it that 2 young officers couldn't subdue an older man without throwing him to the ground? That is just such an extreme reaction. Honestly it makes me wonder what kind of psychopath this officer is. Does he have literally no compassion or empathy? Even IF this gentleman was a criminal (innocent until proven guilty though) the police have no right to inflict such bodily harm. They are not allowed to use as much force as they want. They are supposed to use only as much force as is needed. That is what so many seem to forget.
And if a teen had done the same thing to this man, the teen would be charged with much more serious of a crime than assault. The teen would probably be looking at decades in prison. This man will prob plea down to a few years.

The punishments the Police are meeting out no longer fit the crime. Did they need to tackle that man to the ground for selling a couple of loose cigarettes? Seriously? Come on. Write him a ticket and citation and fine him and move on. This is all getting surreal. Shooting a 12 yr old with a TOY gun sitting on a bench at a park, and shooting him within 2 SECONDS of pulling up without first understanding what they are coming upon?
Yes, there is justifiable use of force. But, more and more, they are using that as excuse while we sit by letting them kill and maim innocent people.

But they investigated themselves and found they did nothing wrong! Lol
I know it must be a damn hard job. But it isn't the only job in the world that is damn hard. And lots of other jobs take abuse from the public, and are dangerous. The only difference is, cops have weapons and are allowed to use them.
My absolute favorite is the video where they ask they young black man to get his license and then shoot him for reaching for it. Seriously? You just told him to get his identification! He says they whole time "you told me to get my ID! I was just doing what you said! What did you shoot me for?" That officer should be fired and charged with attempted murder too. But I think he was just given a paid vacation.

Yes, it is a damn hard job. Made harder by idiot cops who give other cops a bad name. GOOD cops should want to weed out these idiots. It tarnishes the hard job they do every day. And, yes, there are grey areas. Times when they absolutely have to make a instant decision and at times those decisions turn out to be wrong. Nobody is saying to punish that whatsoever. In the haze of a dangerous situation, we all grasp that. It is the COPS who are turning non-dangerous situations into lethal ones. Illegal cigs, old man walking outside, etc. The kid with the toy gun, yes, go investigate, absolutely. But they are not using any common sense whatsoever. There are times to use deadly force. These aren't those times.
