DN has discovered World Market.  And she went into the shop the other day to get Valentines day gifts.  They have these mugs, sold separately, in the store for Valentines Day.

38494_XXX_v1.tif&wid=500&cvt=jpeg

38493_XXX_v1.tif&wid=177&cvt=jpeg

Again, they are sold SEPARATELY.  They are $5.99 a PIECE.  Not sold as a set.  Apparently there was a lesbian in there complaining to the manager.  She wanted to know why they didn't have hers and hers sets.  He told her they don't sell them in SETS.  They are sold individually and if she wished she could buy two of the hers mugs and they would then be hers and hers.  The lady got really angry and told him that there was no point in buying two of the SAME mugs that they needed two DIFFERENT hers mugs so they could tell them apart.  The manager told her they only carried those two.  The lady then began saying she was tired of discrimination and wanted to know why World Market couldn't acknowledge the gay population.  DN said the manager was trying as best as he could but this lady just kept on.  She said some of the patrons commented on how rude the lady was.  Now before you start flaming me about how not all gay people are rude that's not the point.  I am not making a broad sweeping generalization like that.  This story made me feel sorry for the manager.  I'm sure he was doing the best he could and he wasn't allowed to tell her to go away.  What a customer service nightmare!

Actually, he could. If the one is causing a scene and making ng the others uncomfortable, he can ask the belligerent one to leave.

Of course then that would have become about her being gay too and not about her being disruptive and acting like a butt.

I think a lot of times these discrimination things we hear about have more to do with the persons attitude and behavior than about orientation.

I love world market. It would be dumb to have two different hers because then they would need two different his. The customer just wanted to be a bitch.

This lady was throwing out words like discrimination, prejudiced, and non acknowledging of the current gay population. She sounded like a real piece of work. I'm not sure how not having two hers coffee mugs is discrimination though!

Some people just like to create a problem where there is none. If I go to world market and don't see what I am looking for I go somewhere else. I don't go pitch a fit accusing the manager of discriminating against me because I am short or fat.

Wait a minute! There is no World Market store in the Boston area. That's discrimination against Bostonians! I'm filing a lawsuit.

And I demand that they sell a coffee mug that says Boston on it.

And here's the best part of all this. World Market moved into a strip mall that they're rapidly expanding. All the stores are pretty much within walking distance. A few doors down from World Market are Belk's, Khols, Pier One, BB&B just to name a few. Looking for coffee mugs? Try those.

You know, if they were sold in sets, I could see her point. I don't agree with the tantrum, but I could empathize. But they weren't sold in sets. So get over it.

DD16 is an athlete and a big Nike fan. The stuff there just fits her perfectly and it lasts and the technical gear works - keeps her dry or warm or whatever. But...

She refuses to shop at the huge Nike store in MOA because the whole entire front of the store is all men's merchandise. Both sides of the store. The women's merch is all at the back. She went to the manager and complained and said she didn't feel it was right to relegate half of their potential customers to the "back of the bus" and that when she passed the store, she didn't see merchandise or marketing that spoke to her as a female athlete. He agreed, said it was an issue that they had talked to corporate about, but it was out of his control. She said she was sorry to hear that and we left without making a purchase. That is the way you handle these situations. Not with a tantrum.

Just buy two and get a paint pen and write your names on them.  They have special markers for coffee cups.  DN bought a cup with an M on both sides and put a in the middle with the marker to make it read MM.  It's adorable.  So yes, she needs to get over herself.

As far as the second part many times it's corporate that makes the decisions and that's when you take it up with corporate.  But to yell at a manager who has no say so in the whole thing is just wrong.

I would go out out of my way for someone who approached me in a kind manner. If you honestly have a question and just want clarification on a policy, I will go out of my way to help you out. If you stand there and bitch me out, I will dig in and that policy will become iron clad. The thing is, we see so many people work to get around the policy, we know all the tricks. I will tell you exactly what you need to do to get around it, if you are nice.

And I always explain the policy to the patron.

Public libraries (at least in Indiana) get the bulk of their funding from property taxes. If you work in Marion County, but live elsewhere, you are not eligible for a card...unless you want to pay a non-resident fee.

I could not even see throwing a temper tantrum about a coffee cup. I might ask the manager if they had any more and when he said no I might say something like, "Oh poo, it would have been nice if you did!" Yes, I really have said stuff like that. But that is where it would end. Sometimes people will say, "You might try at...and see if they have anything!"

She just needs to get over herself. Store buyers buy what will sell in QUANTITY. They are not going to stock mugs to satisfy the idiot who thinks even the option to buy 2 hers mugs is not enough.

Truth is they probably only sell those mugs at Christmas and Valentines day.  I just can't see them selling big any other time of the year.  Unless it was for a wedding or something but that store is not notorious for wedding stuff.

I figured it might get controversial because apparently some of the other customers were whispering some things like "She wants special treatment..." Typical stuff that you hear whenever there is a conversation about homosexuality. I figured some here might mimic the attitudes of a few of the other customers in the store. Apparently the self proclaimed lesbian was making a huge scene about being a lesbian and being discriminated against. This board has a tendency to get heated sometimes. Just thought it had the potential to flame worthy.

If you're asking me what I think? I think she was a spoiled brat using her lesbianism to get her way. No store has to carry any product they don't want to and that includes products for ANYONE. If I go into a store and see a pretty dress that I want but they don't have it in pink it's not the stores job to make me one. But some people will use whatever means they can to try to get their way. I thought that had the possibility to make some upset.

Is there a reason you're aggravated I posted it?

I thought it was pretty simple too.  But those are the things that usually end up in 100 page threads!  I figured this might be one of those.
