Thanks, NJN :)

I didn't know they made Vick's nightlights. That just might be the ticket.

SO the accident that detoured me this morning turned out to be one of my gym friends. A tree uprooted from all the rain and fell across the road onto her car. There was also a downed power line. She is a very lucky lady.

Look in the medicine section. I think I found mine by the baby cough meds. Or just ask the pharmacist. It looks just like a glade plug in type thing. I paid eight bucks for the plug in and three Vicks pads. I got eight refill pads for eight dollars. Sixteen bucks and I still have some of the refills left. DO NOT touch the pads with your bare fingers! That stuff stays on your skin forever. It has a little night light on it. Just plug it in next to his crib and it wafts Vicks through the room. It's wonderful. I LOVED it when I had a cold. I can't take cold medicine and it was the only thing that really helped. They say the pads only smell for like six hours but mine stayed pretty fragrant for long after that. And you could plug it in the living room during the day if he's playing in there. They're really nice and really not that expensive.

You're welcome!  I know it sounds expensive but in reality if you look at the price of a decent bottle of cough syrup these days it's really not that much higher.  And there's the added benefit that you're not actually drugging him up if he doesn't need it!

And it's super convenient because there's a plug right behind the headboard of his crib. He can't reach the plug but the Vick's can reach him.

We got it! Pediatrician also called back and said we can give him a half teaspoon of Children's Benadryl so we got that too. Between that and the night light thingy, he should have a peaceful night.

Thanks for the tip :)

Home from the hospital. It's strange how my mom will be really alert and talkative, then within seconds, she'll be "vacant" and seem confused. She started to get out of bed at one point and we asked her what she thought she was doing, and she said she was getting up to go into the computer room. She thought she was at home. Hopefully she won't get any worse and will level off.

One of the Drs. said that she was really high risk for another stroke because she has had Afib, has high blood pressure, and diabetes. She's having an MRI tomorrow. The attending physician will look at the carotid artery ultrasound in the morning.

We're just hoping it stabilizes and doesn't get any worse.

Oh gosh tlc. I'm really praying for you. I used to work with patients like your mom all the time. They are at a huge risk for falling. It's the confusion. I hope she starts to get better. I really do. My thoughts are with you and your family.

She did fall last night. She talked the night nurses into helping her to the toilet, and she fell when she tried to get up. they were there, but apparently believed her when she said she could make it. They put an alarm on her last night, and we put up all 4 side rails on the bed, but the nurse said they couldn't put all of them up because then it would be considered restraining her which they can't do. So we left the 3rd one up on the good side so she wouldn't swing that leg over. So now she has to use a commode by the bed, which she hates. I told her it was better than having a foley in for 5 weeks.

Yes, it's crazy but side rails are considered restraints.  A long time ago they restrained EVERYONE and they didn't do it in a safe way.  People died.  So now the government came in and made new rules about restraints.  They even consider sleeping pills and pain pills, basically any sedative, a restraint also.  There are chemical, pill, and physical, things like bed rails, restraints.  It's almost impossible to get a restraint form okayed.  We have had families BEG us to use some form of restraint for the patients own safety.  It's just not allowed.  As a nurse it's scary as all get out when you have a patient fall.  And it happens in a split second.  I've had patients fall right in front of me.  It's like watching your newly walking toddler slip and their head is going straight toward the coffee table corner and there's not a darn thing you can do about it.

I really feel for you.  I know it's hard.

Yeah restraints are a huge no no.
