Female Inmate's last meal
Permalink

The first woman scheduled to be executed in Georgia since 1945 placed an order for her last meal earlier this week, and it's a big one.

Kelly Renee Gissendaner has been on death row since 2008 after being convicted of orchestrating a plot to murder her husband. She's set to die by lethal injection on Feb. 25.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that Gissendaner ordered:

...cornbread, buttermilk, two [Burger King] Whoppers with cheese and all the trimmings, two large orders of French fries, cherry vanilla ice cream, popcorn and lemonade. She also wants a salad with boiled eggs, tomatoes, bell peppers, onions, carrots and cheese to be topped with Paul Newman buttermilk dressing.

The Daily Mail estimates that themeal contains about 4,200 calories.

Gissendaner's request bucks a recent trend by inmates facing execution. Recently, the AJC notes, male prisoners in her position have merely asked for the same meal that was being served to the other inmates, but not once did they eat what was brought to them.

Inmates' final meal requests can get rather bizarre -- single olives, buckets of ice cream, gratuitous chicken and strawberry platters -- so in that context Gissendaner's last dinner isn't that out there.

In 1998, Gissendaner was convicted of convincing her boyfriend to murder her husband in order to collect on insurance policies. Her former boyfriend, who killed her husband by stabbing him and beating him, cooperated with prosecutors in exchange for a life sentence. He testified against Gissendaner and pleaded guilty.

I don't understand the last meal idea either. What? A reward for killing someone and facing the consequences?

The last meal doesn't bother me. They are about to die - it's a kindness. Kindness doesn't have to have a good reason.

I think if it is a reasonable request then fine. Burger King or a steak or whatever. But not 10 trips to 10 different places.

So, what would your last meal be? Mine would be KFC with mac and cheese, a Sonic caramel shake, and an orange. Maybe creamed spinach too. And pecan pie with vanilla bean ice cream. Oh, and a few lindor white truffles.

Lobster tail stuffed with crabmeat. Or maybe lobster stir fry from the Japanese steak house.

Add a baked potato and some spinach and this would be my meal as well. A whole bottle of wine might not be enough...lol

I go back and forth on the death penalty. Part of me thinks its just ridiculous to kill another human being. Who are we to decide that sort of punishment? Not to mention that being in prison seems like more of a punishment than death in some instances.

I'm will LL that giving a last meal is a kindness. We should show mercy and that we are not at their level.

I think I'd have a bottle of very nice French white wine, a super fresh baguette and a charcuterie and cheese plate as my last meal.

I have a bigger problem with the fact that the person who actually committed the murder is only getting life in prison, but the woman who asked him to do it is dying. That makes no sense to me. I understand he took a plea deal. But one person cannot force another to murder someone. He chose to commit murder., all she did was ask him to. Why should she die? He is the one who should get the stiffer penalty IMHO. I a, not saying she is blameless, but his crime deserves more punishment than hers. He is the greater threat to society.

I think they should get a choice of last meal, a reasonable meal. Not 5 entrees and 10 sides. You should get 1 entree, 2 sides and a dessert. Done.

That was what I thought too.  But maybe she is craving a burger or two in this case.  But I would still want one from a real restaurant that was pure angus.

Salmon or scallops or steak tips, risotto, asparagus.

And creme brulee or a brownie sundae for dessert.

A ribeye steak, baked potato, ceasar salad, coke, and chocolate mousse with strawberries for dessert.

But kill me quick after that, b/c my stomach won't like it!

I want Chicken Paprikash over homemade spatzle or noodle dumplings... (not the bread kind!) for my main course. I want my ex boyfriend's mom from High School to make it. For sides I'll have Seared scallops/prime rib/a couple of crab legs, roasted baby brussel sprouts, a slice of home made bread... and a bowl of French onion soup and a salad with mozzarella and ranch dressing. lol!

I'm sure there's more but that's it for now. aww

That is what I thought about mine too.  With the rich seafood & butter I'd be a little ill later.

Ha!  They weren't leftover.  I made them specifically for my lunch the night before.  I couldn't stand to eat another frozen $1 pizza or can of Chef biggrin

I have no problem with the death penalty. Yes, I do have a pang of sorrow for the soul about to meet their maker but they have earned their fate.

As for last meal, I don't know that I would be able to eat anything.

And the mess it makes during the execution. Well, I just don't know if I would want to live or die through it.
