Teaching kid to be polite is absolutely the responsibility of the parent. Of course there are parents who have NO IDEA how to be polite themselves.

Yes Ma'am Yes Sir is a way of life here. It may not be anywhere else. But then again, the south is more known for being nice. More pleasant. So maybe that is something to think about.

Why? Because it is absolutely expected that a child be polite. There is no exception to the rule. And that doesn't change as they grow into adults.

And the monetary punishment is no different than any other punishment.

Any punishment needs to be something that hits home. If a quarter works - that is what you use. It's pretty minor, really.

I agree. You use what works.

I really think some think kids should never have any consequences for any reason. They think that reason and lecturing or just even ignoring makes a good teaching tool. Well. I guess it could. But it usually doesn't leave the impression that needs to be left.
