At work I'm frequently on the phone, telling people catalog numbers, account numbers, phone numbers, and other numbers that may be 8 to 16 digits or more.
When you're saying these to someone over the phone, how do you break them up?
For example, most of us in North America would read someone a phone number as 3 digits (pause), 3 digits (pause), four digits.
How about a 16 character credit card number?
If the number is
1234567890123456
do you read it as
123, 456, 789, 012, 345, 6?
or as
1234, 5678, 9012, 3456 ?
A customer account number might be 12345678
so would you read it as
1234, 5678?
or 123, 456, 78 ?
How would you break up this purchase order number ...
1-1211611567 ?

I break it up in 3-4 digit bites. I try and break it up in a place that makes sense. In the example you gave, I would break it up after the double ones.
