I use to not be able to have any of my food touch. My mom indulged this by serving my food in a bunch of small bowls and ramekins. I would eat each thing separately. I had to finish one at a time. It wasn't until I got to college that this behavior stopped.

I think that's pretty typical, Bonny.

Maybe for kids. But for a 18 year old it was tough transition. I still sort of freak out if gravy or dressing touches other food that it doesn't go wtih, but I'm better about not freaking out about it.

My Dad & his sister were both like this. Not the extreme of it being in separate dishes but not touching on the plate & eating one thing at a time. My Dad always ate his least favorite first & saved his favorite for last.
I generally like to mix them together on a forkful. Like a bite of meat & potatoes & gravy on a forkful together.

I still am like that. I only put one item on my plate at a time until I finish it. If gravy touches something it doesn't "go" with (besides stuffing and meat) I won't eat that part. Gross.
But yeah, I never had separate dishes or anything. I just put one item on my plate at a time.

Yes. Generally our tastes change as we age. Our bodies need different things in different amounts so our likes and dislikes tend to follow.
I went through a stage in which eggs wee the nastiest thing ever. But I like them again. Only I cant eat them as often as I use to.
I go through times when meat isn't good.

I tend to eat the same types of food and am not an adventurous eater. My food preferences have not really changed much. I like a lot of sweet-sour food (like orange or lemon chicken), and love foods cooked with soy sauce. I do not eat a lot of red meat, mostly chicken. I like to eat veggies, but usually in tossed salad form (a 2-lb bag at Sam's Club is only $2.89). Other kinds of veggies are quite expensive at the market. Once in awhile I will crave bread, but a 1.5-lb loaf will go bad before I can finish it all. I love orange juice, but it is rather pricy (even at Costco or Sam's, it is close to $7.00 a gallon). I get these cravings for certain foods, and once I have it, I can go quite awhile without eating it again. My diet depends on how much money I have to spend on groceries, which is not much ($60-80 a month), so I do not have much wiggle room. I do, however, get really tired of eating ramen, and I usually put various sauces in it to perk up the taste.
What I have found is that I eat a lot less now than I used to. I get full very quickly, and sometimes I am just not hungry so I don't eat. This upsets my MD, as at my last visit in January, I had lost 5 lbs. Three meals a day is rare. Two meals a day and a few snacks is more like it. I have to eat something for breakfast so I can take my medication. I have to eat lunch Monday through Friday at work to "keep up appearances". Dinner is optional. I find that I do need to snack during the day because I have blood sugar issues.
Gone are the days of eating at a buffet. I would just be wasting my money.

Have you ever though of going to a food pantry to supplement your groceries? There are many churches that would be helpful.
I hated sweet potatoes as a kid. Detested them. I literally gagged them down. Then I found out you can eat them just like regular potatoes. I love a nice sweet potato with butter, cheese, sour cream, and bacon bits.

My food preferences have definitely changed, but not because of a shift in my taste or desires.
My body doesn't tolerate all the grease and other things in a delicious greasy fast food burger anymore, or much of anything fast food. So I'm more of a healthy eater than ever before, by necessity.
I have noticed that as I grow into the Golden Age I want to have the food I had as a child growing up. No need for anything new; just like to have the old favorites. Unfortunately most of them have to be made from scratch, but that keeps me busy.
