Awwww jlbear. I am sorry about your freezer. We will help you eat your food. I bow my head in silence.

The refrigerator that came with the house stopped working one day, because the electric motor that ran the cooling fan that blew on the tubing outside the box (underneath) died.
So the system would overheat then shut down, until it cooled.
There's an electric motor company a few miles from here, they fixed the motor for me for $20. It then worked for the next 5 years.
BUT if a refrigerator, freezer, or air conditioner looses its' coolant, it's NEVER worth fixing, because sealing the lead doesn't work for very long. Much better to buy a new, more energy efficient one.

The outlet is the first thing we checked. That's not the problem. We won't put much money into this one for repairs. We'd rather purchase new since they are not that expensive.
It's an older model that we got second hand. It's not frost free. It's the perfect size to keep the things we use/eat the most rather than heading outside to go to the garage freezer.
I was looking for a freezer a while ago and I was shocked at how many were not frost free. I just wanted a small one and couldn't find what I wanted.
We bought a small GE freezer from Home Depot. It is not frost free, but we haven't had ice build up, yet, and it's been almost a year. We bought this one -

Yeah, I found that too LL. I found a nice upright at Sears but I was concerned about the clearance for the door and they couldn't switch it. Since I'm under 5 feet tall the chest freezers can be too deep.

With this one, if you put maybe a crate upside down in the bottom, it would bring things up far enough you'd be able to reach with no problem and you could still keep an extra turkey under the crate for someone else to get out for you!

Pretty sure SB isn't buying GE. Wasn't it her sis that had a kitchen redone and all the GE appliances crapped out in the first year?
No, it was my sis. And it was a brand new house that she had built. The GE appliances all crapped out during the first year. The builder replaced them all with something decent. I forget which brand she went with. This was a few years ago.

I thought about putting some gallon water bottles in the bottom. This would also help keep things cold if the power went out. I was also surprised at how many chest freezers don't have locks.

I'm guessing they they used "builders grade" appliances. It's like getting that $199. Laptop on black friday. Bottom of the line quality.
We replaced our GE washer with LG. We had a cheap Hotpoint (our first from way back) that lasted 10 years until I actually broke it - my fault, not the machines. They, we replaced it with a GE and that only lasted 3 or 4 years. Now we have an LG with a 10 year warranty.
Oh, and our cheap Hotpoint dryer was still working, but we had to replace it b/c the capacity couldn't match the new washer.

I will be scoping out the local scratch and dent place. That's where I got my big freezer. 22 cu ft for less than $500. And our washer, dryer and fridge.
I don't want a chest freezer. To me, they take up too much floor space, things get lost on the bottom and that whole leaning over and getting the boobies cold thing does not work for me.
I had a nice upright freezer when we lived in NC. We had a really nice storage room that had electricity. I don't have that here so I'd have to keep it in the house.

Actually, you should replace your fridge every 10 years. Once it is ten years old it tends to use a lot more energy to run it. It can actually save money to buy a new one.

My refrigerator is 14 years old. I'm debating on just getting a new one or waiting for this one to die.
Call your electric company, and ask if there are rebates (usually $50) for trading in a working refrigerator.
Or donate it, to a family, that needs it.
When we bought our Whilpool Duet Sports, Our washer was toast. ( And Wayne was fighting, MRSA. I needed a washer that could sanitize, and kill MRSA.)
I got the washer, and figured out, really quick, that the old dyer wouldn't be able to keep up.(the new washer could hold a lot more, than the old dryer could.)

Speaking of fridges - I clean mine at least once a month, often more frequently. I take out all shelves, all drawers and throw out any forgotten leftovers and expired food.
Anyway, my fridge has smelled like rubbing alcohol all week! I've cleaned it, and for the life of me I can't figure it out. What the hell? Any ideas?

Lesson learned in February: I don't have to keep up, I just have to keep moving!
I've actually been looking at new refrigerators a few months. I currently have a large freezer on the bottom model which is nice. All the newer ones have a huge drawer on the bottom instead of a door. I really don't like them. They just seem too awkward for what I want. The side by sides are nice but the freezers all seem so small but they would be easy to keep organized.
