Dear Abby:Modern Teen Love

DEAR ABBY: My 17-year-old son told me he has finally had his first kiss, and it was with another boy. I'm not sure what to think.

When he was in eighth grade, he had a crush on a girl named "Lisa." She rejected him because she had a girlfriend. Then he dated a girl, "Annie," but it didn't last because he said he felt only friendship for her. Then he became friends with this boy "Joey" in high school, who spent the night several times. He told me from the start this boy was gay (this is the boy he kissed). Now Joey has a girlfriend.

To say the least, I'm confused. I know that in this generation, everything is acceptable. I have no problem if my son is gay, and I will love him no matter what, but I honestly think he is just confused. (He says this, too.) Is there anything I can do to help him through this? -- MODERN MOM IN MARYLAND

DEAR MODERN MOM: Yes. Tell your son you love him and all you want is for him to be happy. Then let him figure this out for himself. Trust me, he will. Things will be clearer in the future.

Fake letter.
Show me a real live teen boy (or girl, for that matter) that tells mommy all of this stuff. Nope. Not buying it.
If on the off chance it is real, mom needs to butt out, and tell son gossiping about his friends isn't nice, and his sexual identity is his own business, but he will be expected to keep his room clean and take out the trash regardless.

Maybe we should talk about loving PEOPLE. Then gender is irrelevent. Maybe this kid has crushes on PEOPLE he finds attractive.

My kids.  I know more about them than I ever wanted or needed to know.  They tell me EVERYTHING.  Always have.  Especially my son.  The kid has no filter.

I think, in today's world, so much is thrown at kids, and puberty is confusing enough already. Give them time and space and let them figure it out.

Well, it is something to think about if you are letting your kids go to sleepovers. Not only do you have to worry if there is a weird uncle lurking about, you don't know what type of experimentation the kids are now doing with one another.

Seriously?  Do you just bury your head in the sand or what?  I didn't say to never do those things.  I am saying that a smart parent has to consider these kinds of things.  If you don't, then fine and dandy.

No, I don't (didn't) bury my head in the sand, but geez, give the kids a little leeway.  The world isn't as bad as you seem to believe...
