DEAR HARRIETTE: My daughter (a senior in high school) was invited to go on spring break with friends from her high school. They are going to Florida. I keep hearing the news reports of wild teenagers getting in trouble at those kinds of things, and I am nervous.
My daughter tends to be very well-behaved, and she talks to me about her friends and her life all the time. But I know peer pressure can be hard to resist. I don't want to tell my daughter "no," but I'm also concerned. How can I make a decision? -- Worried, Washington, D.C.
DEAR WORRIED: I fully understand your concern. Peer pressure is real, and sometimes even the best behaved of the bunch can buckle under it. That said, your daughter is at the age where she is about to be on her own. Hopefully, you have taught her along the way about the importance of making smart decisions.
Sit down with your daughter and talk to her about the upcoming trip. Ask her to tell you what she thinks the activities will be. Ask if she has any concerns about what may happen on the trip. Express your concerns about what you have heard happens at some spring break activities. Ask her what she thinks she will do if her peers begin to participate in activities that might be dangerous.
Don't grill your daughter; just talk. Tell her you trust her, and remind her that it can be hard to make smart choices when others are doing other things. Remind her that she can always pick up the phone and call you, at any time of day or night, if she needs help.
Senior in HS going to Fla on Spring Break? Um, not sure I would let my own daughter do that. Going in college is one thing. High School is totally another.

You would be in the vast minority here. I don't know ANY senior that didn't go to Florida on Spring Break. From my time to my kids' time.

In High School? Really? That is totally unheard of around here. I just would not allow my 17 yr old daughter to go. Sorry, I think that is too young.

Yep. Really. I just assumed that was a given. Interesting...

I figured it was a given in college. But, not HS. I mean, what is the drinking age in FLA?

It's 21, but that never stopped anyone! LOL!

Well, I know that, lol. But I wouldn't want to allow my 17 or 18 yr old daughter to go and then get arrested and get a police record or something stupid like that.
C had something going on here so she didn't go. I think it was some trip with her friends at church. So she was one of the few that didn't go.
It's tradition.
I understand the concern but by then, they ain't gonna do anything in Florida they are not doing on any given weekend any way.
Senior trip was another trip everyone took. I went to work instead.
We lost two classmates on the way down that year.

Well, sorry but I am not going to PAY for my daughter to go some alcohol fueled sex party. If you are adult and have your own money to spend to go down there, fine and dandy. But, mommy ain't paying for that.
We only went as far as Virginia Beach my Senior year. Pretty much the whole Senior class was there along with some Juniors. My parents had trepidations as well they should have. It was quite the party.

It's totally different when you're hundreds of miles away from your home & your parents.

No it isn't. There is nothing happening in Florida that isn't happening in your home town.

PCB, Daytona, Miami. All popular for Spring breakers.
I'd let. C go in a heartbeat.
And who said anything about paying for it? The kids mostly pay for it them selves. At least here.
And with 6-10 in a room it's really cheap.

We used to call protecting your children "Good parenting". No I am not going to allow u to put yourself in a position you are not yet mature enough to handle.
By the time Spring Break rolls around your senior year, most of the kids are 18 and leaving for college in just a few short months. I really don't see what the big deal is...

Nope. She is not. I feel the same way she does.

She likely trusts her daughter, but there are thousands of other people there. No way in hell.

Absolutely not. I KNOW what PCB is like on spring break. FORGET IT. No way. Not happening.

Why should i pay for that? And kids mature a lot from HS to college. That would be another year later.

Who said you should pay for anything? Do your kids not have money? From HS graduation to first day of college is about 2 1/2 months. You think they mature THAT MUCH in 2 1/2 months?

If they have money they can use it to pay for books and college not go fritter it away on a vacay.
And if they have money for both?
G's daughter has so many scholarships that she gets about $8000.00 back each year AFTER she has paid for her books and tuition. She graduates in May Summa Cum Laude with University Honors, the only one in her class to do so...

They don't. They don't have money to pay all their college costs and take vacays. If your kids do , that's fine but my kids don't have tens of thousands saved.

It's not tens of thousands. I trip to PCB on Spring Break costs about $400 total. That's splitting the room, splitting the gas, eating PB&J sandwiches.
It's just foreign to me that a senior wouldn't be allowed to go. As I said, it's a given here...

I don't care. My son is 19. He works at BK but we pay for most of his tuition. So no he isn't going to go on a vacay while mom and dad have their noses to the grindstone subsizing his expenses.

This is the thing. I would have let C go. But I knew she could take care of herself. She was mature enough to go.
If a parent knows their child is not, then they shouldnt let them ago.
I dont think anyone should go who isn't able to take care of them selves in most any situation.

Not sure why u would want to send your kids to a place with a lot of intoxicated people around but maybe you dont care what your kids are exposed too.
What happened to "not my monkey..."?
I know what my kids are able to do.
You know what your kids are able to do.
IF you are not comfortable With it, then fine.
If someone is, then fine.

Did I say "don't send your kids?"? Um, no, I didn't. You are the one starting with "oh you don't trust your kid bullschit". That has nothing to do with anything. So whatevs.
