Now that Husker is back, it appears to me that some threads have turned into arguments that have NOTHING  to do with the thread topics.

Perhaps everyone who wants to argue and fight could confine that stuff to THIS THREAD, so the rest of us could discuss actual discussion topics.

Please??

As much as I feel you have a right to complain about each other, I would like it if every time a thread turns into a personal argument or member-bashing,

that thread would be immediately CLOSED, and the people who might want to discuss the real topic could just start another thread with the same title.

Okay?

I haven't been on every thread to know if there is arguing on all of them. But to call out Husker as the reason is not right. We argue with or without him. The spring break thread had a lot of arguing and Husker didn't even comment on that thread until page 3 I believe and he wasn't even arguing.

I agree.  And I'm not closing threads because adults argue.  This thread is a pointless pot stirring.

And please don't make long tags that go over the other columns - it's annoying.

We are human. Sometimes we argue. Threads never stay on topic.

While we're on the subject, what is it with all the public service announcements you start, Ed? Isn't this the type of stuff that got us removed from the old board website?

Excessive spam messages were a problem.  I'm deleting the ones that get flagged as spam - they are not important enough to keep.

I'm not saying he's doing it, I've just observed that it's escalated since his return.

I get messages when the spam occurs, and I can see where if I ignored it for months, it would build up to an unreasonable amount to be dealt with.  But, the posts still need by-lines and credit included.

Personally, I find a lot of the recall ones to be very localized with extremely limited relevance to the geeks.

Some people seem to like them. I'm not saying that every one of them applies to a bunch of people here, but most of them COULD apply to and be helpful to one or more people here.

I'm pretty sure I'm the only one here who gets recall notices from the FDA, some of which are for products members here have been purchasing.

Isn't it potentially good to know the (whatever) you might have in your cupboard or refrigerator has been found to contain salmonella or plastic shards or campilobactor?

Tell me, what kind of Public Service Announcements do you think I should stop posting?

I'm not opposed to any of them, I was just concerned that due to the amount of them, we would run into trouble. But LL clarified that it was the spam ones that were the problem.

They get labeled as spam when the extra content is not removed - links, pics, etc.

Yep - that's the reason most of the time, and then I have the option to approve it or deny it.  If I can't figure out why it was labeled as spam (like I can't see any excess content, etc.), then I approve it.  If it's obvious why it was flagged (that all the links, ads, etc. are still there) - I delete it, I'm not the post cleaner.

First, I'm paying the same fee per column inch as everyone else is.

Second, I'm already leaving out about 90% of them that I think probably won't impact anyone here.

Third, anyone who wants to can easily skip all of my posts. But if a headline catches their eye because they use whatever is being recalled,

then they will have to resolve their own dilemma about whether to read about recalls.

I'm not in a position to decide which members will be helped by any specific recall notice.

Unless you someone shuts me down, I plan to continue posting Car Talk articles too. They don't always generate lively discussions either, but people have told me they enjoy reading them.

What I might cut out would be notices about fraudulent or dangerous "dietary supplements" because the people who use them probably don't want to know when their supplement is making them sick, or at best is not giving them what they pay for. Should I drop that subject?

Fine. These are the threads I started that are currently on the first page:

18 Tips for Raising a Child with Bipolar Disorder

Stay Away! The 5 Least Reliable Cars and Trucks You Can Buy

Baby born with rare diagnosis: He only has half of his heart

Sneaky Tricks Steal Credit Card Numbers and Escrow Payments

Cancer is in remission for teen forced to undergo chemo

Deserves a Shot

Boston man gets revenge on driver who parked in shoveled spot

Argue here, please

ok

 Which one(s) shouldn't be here?

Maybe I shouldn't have wasted anyone's time by posting the Scambusters article about stealing credit card info and escrow payments,

or the post about bipolar children. Neither got a lot of readers, and no one commented about them.

But MAYBE someone who DID read the post(s) got something from it.

And if not, how am I supposed to know that in advance?

The threads listed above now have 980 views and 178 responses. That's not nothing.

I cannot accumulate FDA notices then later decide which three to post.

IMHO, there has been more fighting in the last month and a half then there had been for a long time. So zip it and stop blaming one individual. There is plenty of blame to go around for being testy.
Grow up (myself included) and get over it.

That is what I am talking about. There is not ONE SINGLE national name brand I recognize in that. And I doubt I'm the only one since they didn't get any comments. You could be a little more selective.

I think some of the bickering might dissipate if we had some new members to bring in new topics rather than just discussing the same things all the time.

Although, I have no idea how to get people to come to a message board.

I just ignore all those posts for the very same reason.  If they were more selective I might read some of them.

I like that idea.  I also like some of Ed's PSA's, while others don't apply to me.  Personally, I would hate to see you stop posting them, Ed.  A sticky'd thread might be the best of both worlds...

Invite your Geeky friends!  And now that I've said that, I'm going to put my money where my mouth is and make some invites myself.  LL, I'll tell them to tell you "Honey's Mom sent me" if you wish.

Here is the thing.... this is my place away from day to day life in L.A.  I kind of like it that way.  I'd prefer to get new people on the board that I don't know in person.

There should be a dating site for message board members.

On one hand, I agree with this. On the other, I think there are a few on here you will argue and bicker no matter what. They are a small minority, but they are responsible for most of the arguing. It's like they thrive on it.

I don't mind people discussing and disagreeing pleasantly. But the venom and the snark and the insults are totally unnecessary.
