Catholic Teacher Suspended over Comments on Homosexuality

A long-time teacher at a Catholic school in New Jersey has been suspended over comments made about homosexuality on her personal Facebook page.

The drumbeat to punish her began with former students, including a reality TV cast member and the nephew of Susan Sarandon.

Patricia Jannuzzi teaches at the Immaculata School, the parish school of Immaculate Conception Church in Somerville, New Jersey. Her trouble started when she responded to something LGBT provocateur Dan Savage said to Dr. Ben Carson: “Being gay is a choice. Prove it. Suck my dick,” after Dr. Carson said being gay was a choice.

Jannuzzi linked to the story on her personal Facebook page and wrote:

See this is the agenda…one minute they argue that hey (sic) are born this way and it is not a choice to get 14th amendment rights equal protection…bologna…which was carved for permanent characteristics..unchangeable characteristics such as race and disability..but once they in (sic) the 14th amendment they will argue everyone should be able to choose being they (sic) gay or lesbian lifestyle…in other words they want to reengineer western civ into a slow extinction We need healthy families with a mother and a father for the sake of children and humanity!!!!

Tom Robinson, a 2001 graduate of Immaculata, started a petition calling Jannuzzi’s comments “hate speech” and “homophobic and short-sighted… disturbing and degrading” and “demanding that hate speech is eradicated for our Immaculata Family.”

Greg Bennett, who is gay and had Jannuzzi as a teacher in 2004, asked his 165,000 Twitter followers to sign Robinson’s petition. Bennett, a former cast member of Real Housewives of New Jersey, called Jannuzzi a “nightmare dumpster human.” Bennett also took umbrage at Jannuzzi’s Facebook call to “close the borders.”

Susan Sarandon even got involved, sharing a letter her gay nephew sent to his former teacher Jannuzzi: “I am certain that the pope himself would take issue with your extreme point of view on homosexuality.” Sarandon wrote on her Facebook page, “High School is a tough time anyway….students don’t need teachers making it even more difficult.”

At first all the school did was order Jannuzzi to take her Facebook page down. They also “investigated” that comments like hers were not a part of her “curriculum.” Two days later the school announced Jannuzzi had been suspended. The letter, from the Monsignor who runs the school, insists the school adheres to the teachings of the Church on “the sanctity of marriage” but “follow Jesus Christ in welcoming all people” except Jannuzzi and those like her of course.

Jannuzzi has worked in various roles for Immaculate Conception Church for going on 30 years. Besides teaching in the school, she also heads the parish office of the New Evangelization, Stewardship and Adult Faith Formation. She also heads something called the St. Thomas More Apostolate “to help insure that our laws are infused with Christian morals and virtues” specifically “life, religious freedom, family life, and moral/ethical issues.”

One graduate who is supportive of Jannuzzi tells Breitbart News, “The bottom line is that she’s been working at the parish and at the school for over 30 years. And they are now shocked, shocked that she is active and vocal on Catholic moral issues.”

Professor Robert George of Princeton, a noted defender of man-woman marriage and religious freedom, tells Breitbart News:

As Matthew Franck has noted, Pope Benedict has said that undermining marriage as the union of Man and woman harms human dignity and “threatens humanity itself.”

Pope Francis has said that same-sex marriage cones from “the father of lies”– the devil.

Are they disqualified from teaching or preaching at Immaculata?

What an irony’–and disgrace—that in the name of inclusion a faithful Catholic woman is being thrown by Catholic school officials to a mob led by Susan Sarandon and an actor on Real Housewives of New Jersey.

So far Jannuizzi has remained silent on the issue.

When will people ever learn?

Post something on FB or other social media, and there WILL be consequences...

Her right to free speech has been revoked.

If you don't see that, you are for the taking of Freedom of Speech.

You don't have to agree. But she has a right, under the Constitution to say it.

 Of course she does.

And her employer, even though it is a CATHOLIC school, has the right to take action.

Freedom of speech is not in fact freedom from consequences. But yeah, she is a catholic teacher, what do you expect?

To me, this is the most offensive statement:

in other words they want to reengineer western civ into a slow extinction

What "action" should she take if she is being consistent with her employer's beliefs?  Maybe we should send copies of all the posts here to everyone's employers perhaps?

Heck, all she has to do now is go on welfare (since she has lost her job) and post any darn thing she wants. She can't loss her job then and we get to support her. Our tax dollars at work ya know. Then she will have real freedom of speech. I have to assume, that welfare recipients can use facebook freely. The rest of us with jobs sure can't.

Those threads were usually in response to posts pertaining to the individuals work place, not a personal opinion devoid of a work involvement. Two entirely different angles, IMHO.

Other places is not here.

This is my favorite line from the whole thing:

The letter, from the Monsignor who runs the school, insists the school adheres to the teachings of the Church on “the sanctity of marriage” but “follow Jesus Christ in welcoming all people” except Jannuzzi and those like her of course.

We accept everyone.  Except those we don't like or approve of.

And this. This cracks me up. What did the school think?

One graduate who is supportive of Jannuzzi tells Breitbart News, “The bottom line is that she’s been working at the parish and at the school for over 30 years. And they are now shocked, shocked that she is active and vocal on Catholic moral issues.”

This school is so hypocritical. Sorry. If they had come up with some better reasons I could support them. But the reasons are so lame. They say they welcome everyone BUT her. OMG that is the epitome of hypocritical. And then to be shocked and appalled that she is a very staunch Catholic. OMG HOW HORRIBLE.

If they had a school policy about posting stuff on FB beforehand then I might could see it. My brother is a teacher and would let all his students and their parents add him to their FB. He claimed it was good for communication. Well, the school got upset and put a stop to it. School should have had this all spelled out already.

Well, it shows how weak the church really is. They will cave to even the slightest pressure. I mean if that is their beliefs, then stand up for them. If not, then stop pussyfooting around and pretending it is if it really isn't. Lame.

This seems a little different.  One - it is her religious views, which are protected and TWO, the view align with that of the Catholic church, her employer.  It's just weird.  So, their position is "We believe homosexuality is wrong but you cannot say that in public."  It's just the most hypocritical thing I've ever seen.

The ones I was thinking of were the guy berating the Chik Fil A girl in the drive thru, and the lady giving the finger at the silence sign at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers.  It seemded people supported the firing of those people.  I do not recall the Freedom of Speech or being owned 24/7 arguments.  The business can fire people for there reasons.

As far as religious speech it does not seem her post is about religious views.  I knew it was considered a sin but is this the Catholic view:

See this is the agenda…one minute they argue that hey (sic) are born this way and it is not a choice to get 14th amendment rights equal protection…bologna…which was carved for permanent characteristics..unchangeable characteristics such as race and disability..but once they in (sic) the 14th amendment they will argue everyone should be able to choose being they (sic) gay or lesbian lifestyle…in other words they want to reengineer western civ into a slow extinction We need healthy families with a mother and a father for the sake of children and humanity!!!!

The point is, she is being punished for speaking her mind.

If this said something against anything else, nothing would have been said or done.

She could have said fat people, welfare people, blonde people, republicans or democrats and no one would have said anything.

So, a Catholic teacher was suspended from a Catholic school over a post that's basically in support of well known and well established Catholic doctrine.

What am I missing? I'm not Catholic, but I don't understand her actionable infraction.

I'm not really getting it either.  And they're a very welcoming church.  Well, except they don't want her or others like her.  So they're welcoming except for that.
