I'm guilty of talking to the dogs.  But DH, he takes it to a whole different level.  He has whole conversations with them.  Not kidding here.  He'll sit them down and he'll actually ask them questions.  "Okay, which one of you dug the hole in the back yard?  Paws up.  I want to see them."  This morning I heard him in the other end of the house saying, "Go tell your Mommy what you did.  Go on.  Go tell her."  Like the dogs are going to run in and talk to me!  He will ask them questions and then wait for an answer!

I say "thank you" all the time to the dog. DH thinks it's hysterical. I also talk to the fish when I feed them.

When I had cats, we would have conversations, but they were not necessarily verbal. Certain things are best communicated using fingertips. And purring.

Now the only "pet" I have is Spouse, and we do sometimes have conversations using words.

What do you mean do I talk to them? We have complex conversations.

And yes. They do talk back!

Monster knows who I am talking about when I ask where they are. He will go find them. Tell him to go tell C what he wants and he will.

Yes, both of us talk to our cat. She seems to understand and she can certainly communicate her desires clearly. I also talk to the two cats that have started coming around for food in the mornings. They seem to understand, too. If only one shows up, I ask where the other is and sure enough the one there goes off and brings back the other.

I've read that dogs can understand up to 65 distinct words used by humans.

Yes - dogs learn words. My dog understands certain words no matter how you say them - outside, dinner, treat, sit.

Oh yeah, we talk to the dog. I read that dogs have the vocabulary of a 3 year old.

He knows lots of words, not just commands.

I swear Monster can spell.

We can't say certain words cause he knows what they mean. Outside, eat, hungry, go for a ride, go get...

So we started spelling. Well the little bugger figured that out too!

My poodles would talk back to you. I swear they would really talk. Monster tries his best.

And Spot will talk to you like he is somebody.

When I took long road trips with my dog and had no one else to talk to of course we would converse. He's great company.

We can't say the T word - treat. And we can't say the W word - walk.  Unless we're serious. If we say it and don't do it, he'll bug us endlessly.

The oldest one doesn't talk much, but the two Dachshunds do. They each have their own "voice."

Sometimes the youngest one texts me...but that only happens when DH is home!

Monster will come tell us what he needs or wants.

He will stand there and stare you down till you do it too.

My little baby kitty is so clever. He knows his name, and a whole bunch of words. Toy, food, dish, water, brother, out, etc. He always knows what I am talking about!

Apparently my cats aren't very smart. They know their names. Maggie knows treaty-treats & cheese. Dez knows snuggles. I'm pretty sure that is all they know.

I talk to them all the time. They may also think I'm not very bright for all I know.

There is no way to say the phrase "Feed the dogs" at my parents house that doesn't result in thair dishes getting thrown at you. YOu can spell it, sig it, say it in spanish, use different tones of voice make it sound sad or like a question, it doesn't matter.

My cats are not smart.  Dex doesn't even acknowledge us speaking to him, Deb is usually under the couch.  She's afraid of EVERYTHING.  If you open the refrigerator door, Dex will come running and rub up against your legs.  Other than that, he has nothing to do with us at all...

Onyx is my scaredy cat.  She spends all her time sleeping on my bed.  She only comes down stairs to eat.

Maggie can hear me pull the plastic string on a cheese stick from anywhere in the house & come running.  She is a cheese - aholic.

Umm, tell that to my rattie, the younger one will sit, tilt her head and listen, then do what I ask.  At her size, she'd very handy a retrieving items that have fallen under furniture.

I think the OP should have been "why don't you talk to your pets?"

Seems almost all of us do it.

I'm shocked that you called my 4 legged baby a pet. She's my master. I heed all of her commands. 😋

Dogs have owners.

Cats have staff!

It's true. I play doorman for our cats, 20 times a day!wink

And, we talk to all of them. smile

They drive me crazy, at times.

But, all of our pets were rescues. And, God only knows what they had been through.cry We know Dusty wouldn't have lasted much longer, if Wayne hadn't found her. Same for Spock. (And, that's just the cats.)

Jupiter was so near death, when Wayne and Mere found her. It really is a miracle, she is still with us.  And, honest to God, I didn't want a dog. We already had 5 cats, at the time.cry

After we spent so much money to save her. And, I could see how much Wayne loved her. I couldn't let Jupiter go.

Back to the original question. Yes, we talk to our pets, all the time.

Do they listen? Sometimes. When they feel like it.biggrin

Mine too. The head tilting is the best.

If I say "let's go get DD" he will run out the door and go sit by the car so we can go pick up DD from the pratice field.

"go home" means the walk around the perimeter of the property is over and he runs right home to our door and sits there on the stoop.

Of course he knows the basics, No, stop, sit, stay, come, drop it (he knows it, he just does t like it) and Cheerios. Those are his fave treat so he knows that word, but not treat.

I guess I wondered if anyone was as weird as my DH. He asks them questions and then sits and waits for them to answer!
