He was missing and out of service for 11 months. Where was he? And what was said by him in the cc k pit?
Very little. He refused to open the door to the captain. In the final minutes, the only sound coming from him was his breathing. And it was not the breathing of someone having a heart attack.

Yep it was steady breathing just as any pilot flying would be recorded as having. He prepared himself for this.

I can't find anything about the relationship between the captain and Lubitz. Except the account of the dialogue from the recording:
Mr. Robin drew upon the 30-minute recording, extracted from a black box recovered from the crash site Tuesday, to portray two sides of Mr. Lubitz—a man who exchanged pleasantries at the start of the flight before becoming walled off in silence.
The pivotal moment, Mr. Robin said, occurred when the captain began to discuss his plan for landing in Düsseldorf with Mr. Lubitz. The younger pilot showed no interest in the crucial procedure, Mr. Robin said, responding tersely to his captain.
“You would expect more of a dialogue to occur and not only short answers,” the prosecutor said.

German prosecutors revealed Friday that searches of Lubitz's homes netted "medical documents that suggest an existing illness and appropriate medical treatment", including "torn-up and current sick leave notes, among them one covering the day of the crash".
They did not specify the illness.
But Bild daily earlier reported that Lubitz sought psychiatric help for "a bout of serious depression" in 2009 and was still getting assistance from doctors, quoting documents from Germany's air transport regulator.
The paper also cited security sources as saying that Lubitz and his girlfriend were having a "serious crisis in their relationship" that left him distraught.
Oh that makes me so mad. This article states he was declared unfit for work by his doctor before the crash. But he is supposed to self-report that to the airline and didn't. The doctor is bound by doctor-patient confidentiality rules and cannot inform the airline.
That is bullcrap. If a doctor declares a pilot unfit to fly, there should be a mandatory reporting to the airline. What a waste of precious human lives that could have been prevented.
And in the US there is that reporting requirement. The Euorcontrol has quickly changed their policies this week.
Not from what I heard on the news from all the experts. They said the only doc who has a reporting requirement is the flight doc. Someone's personal doc has no such obligation.

Well yes that is correct but in the US FAA pilots have to be examined by an FAA doc and those reports are for the FAA and their licensing regs. You don't have to make your medical history public to the FAA if a pilot but then you don't fly.

So how often does the FAA doc examine them? If you have a medical situation you would still go to your personal doc who may put you on a med that would make you unable to fly. You have to self report. The only incentive to self report right now is that IF something happens (an accident) and you didn't self report, you will be uninsurable. Small consolation if that accident was fatal.
The truth is, nothing prevents a pilot from flying if he sees his own personal doc and is diagnosed with something that would make him unfit. The pilot has to self report.

To retain your pilots licence in the US you have to go through a rigorous test, both mentally and physically frequently. The results of those tests are Gov't data, not the personal data stuff . If you don't want your personal data known, don't become a pilot that flies in the FAA controlled space.

Right - but from the time the FAA doc sees you and your next flight, all sorts of medical emergencies can happen. If you don't self report, the airlines would never know.
One of the experts on TV said the FAA doc can be easier to fool. There is no personal relationship and they don't do more than a cursory mental health question or two. They don't do extensive screening. The pilots on TV said they had never been asked any questions other than "everything ok at home?"

Well there are pros and cons. Is every pilot who ever had some depression somehow a danger now? Do we really think all these pilots have prefect stressfree lives? And clamping down makes a culturewhere they will go to even greater lengths to hide it and not get treatment.
So if you have ever gone to your doctor for a sleeping pill,, anxiery or depression pill you will be labeled for life. What will then be considered "fit"?
This isnt run of the mill depression. He had grandiose ideas about being remembered forever blah blah. Depressed people don't generally think like that. So depression might be concurrent or convenient but there is more going on than that.

He must have had some other issue. What a selfish b*stard.

You know, I hadn't thought of that but you're absolutely right, LGS.

Well, he got his wish. He will be remembered forever as the killer of 150 people. Nice claim to fame, huh?

Most depressed people don't want people to remember them . They dont think they are worthy of being remembered for anything. They often think they are easily forgetable.
