I just don't see why gun ownership is such a frickin' huge issue for some people. It's no more an issue than owning a car or a coffee maker.
I must have missed those news stories about a child killing a sibling because of an unsecured coffeemaker...

You also must have missed all the stories about people getting killed in car accidents.
The FACT is that children getting accidentally killed with firearms is exceedingly RARE. It barely even registers as a cause of accidental death for children. It is way below car accidents, accidental drownings, poisonings, etc...
A gun is an OBJECT. Those who think it is such a big deal to own one are just nuts. If you don't want to own one, then don't. There is no law that says you have to.
People NEED cars. People don't NEED guns...they want them, and sometimes they want LOTS of them.

It's just a mindset that I don't understand.

YOU may not "need" a gun--that doesn't mean no one does. Plus, lots of people don't own cars, either.
Plus, that's a ridiculous standard, anyway. We don't "need" TV's, either--or smart phones, or more than three pairs of shoes or so, or a coffee maker, or TONS of other crap that we buy, anyway.
Since when is "need" a reason to not own something? Absurd.

Well, I could agree with you--but then we'd both be wrong.
I see mental illness as much greater of an issue than guns. Our country cannot accept and will not do anything for mental illness. In every single shooting the person had some kind of mental illness. I believe we need to address this.
This. Mental illness can cause people to harm others, and you don't need a gun (as recent events prove)
I have been against us (DH and I) owning firearms, but a recent encounter with an angry customer (and trust me, it was all on him, he was CRAZY!) worried us so much that we are now making arrangements to take classes for gun safety and a CCP. I am not so much worried at home, but we now have a retail location, and any whack job can show up at our door.

It feels like a huge defeat.
JPT, you can not control other people's craziness. All you can do is protect yourselves from the craziness.
It is better to be pro-active and actually do something for yourselves then to rely on someone else to take care of you and yours. The cops will not get there in time to save you or your customers from a nut job. That has been proven time and time again.

Faith isn't something that keeps bad things from happening. Faith is what helps us get through bad things when they do happen.
Czech, we have even had a few dicey occasions while in both Orlando and Daytona. Last time, it was a guy who tried to approach us in a dark and deserted parking lot as we were walking back from Olive Garden to our hotel. I stuck my hand into my purse and said "Please don't approach us!" He turned on his heel and left in a hurry. It occurred to me that I might actually have to back up that implied threat.

Wow. Now that's what I call a good bluff! Good job!
Yeah, I can see needing to be able to back up that bluff.

It's not a defeat JPT, it's an acceptance of the reality that there are scary people in the world and you need to be able to protect yourself from them.
