A clean, clutter-free home sounds absolutely amazing. But purging a lifetime's worth of possessions to get there? Now that seems downright daunting.

"Everyone gets themselves so worked up and upset about decluttering," professional organizer Jill Pollack tells #OWNSHOW. To simplify your space without the stress, Pollack has a list of eight clutter-inducing things everyone has that they don't need. Take ten minutes to rid yourself of these non-essentials and you'll feel 100 times better, she promises.

1. Paint cans

That collection of old paint cans you've been saving for years, just in case your walls need a touch up? Time to toss them, Pollack says.

"For one, you're never going to do [touch ups]," she reasons. "And number two, after six months that paint expires anyway. So get rid of it and feel good about it!"

2. Black boots

Pairing down your shoe collection will free up valuable closet real estate, and Pollack says the best place to start is with your endless parade of black boots.

"It's OK to have a couple of pairs for the same purpose -- you know, the matte boots, the shiny boots -- but you don't need three pairs for the same thing," she says.

3. Mismatched, ugly sheets

Old sheets can make a nice bed for your dog. Other than that, Pollack says there's no reason to hold on to them.

"You only need two sets of sheets per bed," she says. "Really. Unless you never do laundry, in which case you have bigger problems than I can help you with."

4. Candles

We love to put candles in every room, waiting to be lit for a special, romantic occasion. "But I know what's really happening," Pollack says. "Those candles are collecting dust and you never actually light them and the wicks are all mutilated, anyway."

"It's time to get rid of all those dust collecting, 3-year-old, non-vanilla smelling anymore candles," she instructs.

5. Old Cell Phones

old cell phones

"I don't know what you're thinking, if you're going to start some kind of technology museum -- but let's get rid of all the old technology," Pollack says. "That goes for old cell phones, computers and those giant television sets, too."

6. Freebie Pens

You get them at the bank, at the doctor's office and in every gift bag. "Those pens break in your purse and they're cluttering up your junk drawer," Pollack says. Keep your favorites and toss the rest.

7. Old Text Books and Encyclopedias

old text book encyclopedia

There was a time when every home needed a set of encyclopedias -- but that time is no more. "When is the last time you opened a book for reference?" Pollack asks. "I refernced 10 things in the last five minutes on my phone."

Recycle your outdated encyclopedia set. And while you're at it, those ancient college textbooks, too.

8. Delivery Store Magnets

"Who even has a refrigerator that's magnetized anymore? Get rid of all the free magnets," Pollack says.

Just be sure to dispose of them carefully. "You shouldn't just throw them away. They should go in a toxic recycle bin," she warns.

I like the old encyclopedias and magnets and pens and just about all that.

Old sheets are useful too.

This thread is only about an inch wide to the left of my screen. Is that just on mine?

I admit to still having my old Blackberry Curve. My Z10 unfortunately does not have the Word Mole game or the original Brick breaker. They are not available as apps currently. I use my Curve to play those two games. It holds a charge for much longer than my Z10. I only upgraded for a bigger screen. As for sheets, I only have one fitted sheet and two pillowcases, so not much clutter in my place, anyway.  smile

I keep them for a couple reasons.

One, some of the information is better, easier to find and for projects, they are great.

And they are kind of like time capsules.

And when I hear "I'm bored", I remind the kids we have them and they like reading them. I do too.

I love a real book. Not everything has to be "online".

I love cook books. I have some from the 50s. Love them.

I would not get rid of those either.

I don't use them. I usually just get online now for recipes.

I like cookbooks. When we started dating, DH was surprised that I would actually sit down and read them.

I like cookbooks, too, but find that I only really make one or two from each book and if I like them, I'll make them often enough that I can remember them without having to consult the book. And I have found that over the last few years, I consult the internet or my kindle cookbooks more. I'm seriously considering donating mine as well.

I donated my encyclopedias several years ago, along with my books from law school.

We had them growing up and it was a necessity for reports, etc., so that we didn't have to go to the library. So when I moved out at 18, I figured I would need them for my kids and the grocery store sold a different volume each week. I collected them until I had the entire set. But I didn't have kids until I was 43, and teaching methods are different now, along with research tools.

One of my friends does this.  She lives in a place with a very small kitchen.  There is no counter space or room to cook much, so she rarely prepares regular meals.  She and her husband use their microwave a lot.  She told me if she had a bigger kitchen with a lot more room, she would cook more and start baking.  I replied that if she ever gets an urge to bake even in her small kitchen, I will be more than happy to assist in being a taster or eating any edible mistakes.  Doesn't hurt to offer, right?  wink

She will buy cookbooks and read them.  She confessed to me that sometimes she just likes looking at the pictures and doesn't even read the recipes.  She has a number of cookbooks and food magazines so she can ohhh and ahhh over the pictures.  I find it humorous.

I do that too. Actually them. The better ones are like a novel. So much information.

I want older cook books. I love them.

I have a set of encyclopedias. They were in my grandmother's house and are from probably the 40s. They are packed away right now, but I couldn't let those wonderful old books end up in a landfill.

I love my cookbooks. The oldest was published in 1938 and is filled with my grandmothers handwriting. I use that book all the time.

I thought getting rid of a husband was a weight loss program. It's the quickest way to lose 180 pounds I know of.

True, Lily, not to mention lower your grocery bills and keep good food in the fridge longer...keep the bathroom cleaner... I could probably go on and on.
