We went to the movies to see Cinderella. When we came out there was a card on the car from a police officer telling us to call him about the damage to our car. We looked and there is a huge dent in the passenger side door. Apparently, while we were in the movie, some guy did not like how close we were parked to him in the parking lot (it's a very tight, full lot), and got pissed off and screamed and kicked our car and put the dent in it. Then he was going to leave, but an EMS guy that saw him do it stopped him and called the cops. So, the police hauled him to jail for disorderly conduct and when we called them, we had to decide whether to press charges for damage to property. The cop said after the guy calmed down, he admitted what he did and apologized. We went back and forth but decided to press charges b/c we need to make sure he pays to fix the car.

Good for you. It sounds like he needs anger management counseling.
It will go on your car insurance report (if you submit it through them) and make it more expensive to obtain insurance in the future - even if it's not your fault. So it's better to make this guy pay and avoid your insurance company.

We may have to submit it. If the guy doesn't have money, we may be getting restitution back at $50 a month for the next 3 years or something.

Go after him. He needs to learn. Glad you had fun.

Very true. That sucks. Our car was hit outside a bar on St Patty's day a few years ago. It still shows up on our insurance - pisses DH off to the core. We got a police report and everything (no fault accident) but it still counts against us. I don't think that is entirely fair, but what can you do?!

I think you did the right thing, too. He may have said he would pay for it (while he was in custody) but may change his mind once he is released.
The only thing I might watch out for is just how bad is his anger? Will he "hold it against you" because he had to pay for the repairs? Would not want to have to look out for him every time I went outside, etc.
If the space was so tight, how did he have room to make a kicking motion? That's what I need to know :p
We were parked behind him and too close to his bumper - which made him mad. By the time the cops got there, he had moved his car - but they checked both bumpers and found no evidence we had touched his car.

Good for you for not letting him get away with it. He has a bad temper and maybe this will be a wake up call for him. How old is he?

Oh wow! That is crazy! When I went to leave lunch yesterday, someone was parked so close to my car I had to get in on the passenger side and climb over. All I did was call them very unladylike names as I drove off.
On a related note, my phone autocorrects "idiot" to "0Four". Odd

Cop said 20s. He was married, his wife was with him, but she didn't see or hear anything.

Yeah but I bet inside she was enjoying him being caught. He probably abuses her too.

That sucks. But....he has done what I have wanted to do to people who park on top of me. Too many times I have had to go in through the back because the only way I could get in my car was to use the sliding doors, and even then I worried it would come out too far and scrape the idiot who parked next to me. And I always make it a point to park far away from others. It's like I'm a jerk magnet.
Anyway, I would try to get him to pay for the damage.
