Lasix and potassium chloride both contain..

titanium dioxide, AND propylene glycol.

Spouse is allergic to both.

Spouse has new prescriptions for these because of swollen feet and legs.

What to do???

That sounds like a question for her doctor. If he's aware of her allergy and prescribed them anyway, there has to be a reason why.

What to do? Bring it up to the doctor. Easy peasy.

Sure there's a reason: It's not very easy to find a list of inactive ingredients in a prescription drug.

So ... he didn't know what was in the pills.

This government website provides data. It's helpful to know the NDC number of the drug.

Is she waiting until she's in the ER to call him?

Probably waiting until her skin starts to fall apart from the swelling. But I don't think she will go to the E.R. even then.

She found an article written by a doctor (M.D.) that listed foods that help reduce fluid retention, and another that said vitamin B6 helps.

She started taking the B6 yesterday, and eating the "healthy" fruits and veggies. Her swelling has gone down a little.

When she DOES call the doctor, he's going to ask why she hasn't scheduled the CT scan he ordered. She will probably not get it done. He will not be pleased.

Also, for the first time in decades, she slept for an hour with her feet elevated above her heart. She REALLY wants to control this without medical intervention.

But she would take the Lasix if it didn't have those nasty useless chemicals in it.

She might take it anyway.

 That wasn't my question.

But this is really stupid.  If you know there is an allergy and the doctor didn't realize it - WHY ONE EARTH wouldn't anyone call?  How is this even a question?  Sorry, ed, but this one is seriously a no brainer.  Either call the doctor yourself or stand up to your wife and make her call.

What do you mean by "allergic"? A lot of people say they are "allergic" when really they mean they get an upset stomach or some side effect. Allergy means an IgE or immune mediated response such as hives, angioedema , anaphylaxis, etc. So, if you are talking about side effects that is not an "allergy". And ,if she is saying she is allergic, then I would suggest you see an Allergist and be tested to know what she is truly allergic too.

As for your other comments, her doctor might not be "pleased" but she is a grown woman who needs to take responsibility for her own health. And, I think you need to be careful about putting yourself in that role. If she doesn't want to follow doctor's orders then that is up to her. Yes, you can encourage her but she has to take ownership of her own health. I have seen too many spouses, usually men, who just do what "mama" tells them to do and they don't even know what pills they take and take no ownership in their own health. I would strongly encourage you not to fall into that.

A lot of people say "I am allergic" when really they mean they just don't like the side effects.  And, yes, why doesn't she call the doctor herself?

I try really hard to NOT be her parent. So I don't want to do for her, things she can and should do herself.

As for suggesting that I "make her call", I can't "make her" do ANYTHING.

Her allergies are very real. Too much of something (or any at all) can make her break out in a painful, blistery rash that takes WEEKS to clear up.

We found a resource that lists all the ingredients in any drug, once we know the NDC number. But finding out the NDC number of the generic drug that a particular drug store carries in not a small, easy task. She will probably have to phone SEVERAL drug stores and hope the pharmacist will take the time to look up the NDC number for the generic Lasiz they carry.

We have found that when we call physicians with questions like this, they tend to drop her as a patient. It's too complex and/or time consuming for them to deal with it.

Then if she's not willing to do anything, let her suffer. Some people like to be a victim and have something to complain about.

You have 4 choices. She calls the doctor. You call the doctor. She does without. Or she takes them and deals with the side affects. If you don't want to parent her then let her figure it out for herself.

 This.

And if your goal is to let her figure stuff out and handle her life herself, don't show her any sympathy or come to her aid unless life saving measures are needed should she choose to take them.

She did some more research on Lasix (Furosemide) and decided to take the pills. If she starts to react she will call the doctor.

Sounds good to me.
