Why not?  A big bag of rice, frozen veggies, bag of apples and a bit of chicken.  Seems doable.

It has to be three meals a day. That would be the hard part.

Yes, you buy bulk and on eat all month on $120 .  But, who says you have to eat three meals a day?  I almost never eat 3 meals a day.  I either skip breakfast and eat lunch and supper.  Or, I eat breakfast and skip lunch and eat supper.  Or whatever.  There is no law about eating 3 meals a day.  And, nobody said you got to eat all you want.  You can sustain yourself and survive.  Yeah, it will get boring.  But, you can get stuff and eat very cheaply.

An industrial size container of not pre cooked oatmeal is literally pennies a serving.

I knew when I saw what she bought that she wouldn't make it. You can tell she has NO idea what she is talking about.

And Husker, her website is all about the best of the best. The very best yoga mat, regardless of price. Etc. So to pretend she cares about the poor when she has made it a point to put herself in a position of being an expert on the best of the best would automatically open her up for criticism. I would much rather have seen her spend a week with a single working mother and try to keep up, and eat on their budget. That would have been more beneficial to Gwyneth PR wise AND would have given her a much better take on things. I admire her for trying, but I think she chose a crappy way to try.

 This.  How about...

Donate $500,000 to a food bank?  That is a drop in the bucket for her.

Build a food bank.

Offer to fund a food bank for a year.

Work in a food bank for a week.

Work in a soup kitchen every evening for a month.

Donate what she spends on her families food budget for a month, both dining out and eating in, to a food bank.

Donate all the supplies to a school to help grow a sustainable garden to help with their food budget since she's so into healthy food choices.

Donate seeds and buckets (they have one foot by one foot square "buckets" made specifically for indoor or window planting) to the poor.

I can think of a bunch more too.  And any of them would have made me take her more seriously than this little PR stunt.

eta: for spelling

You don't know she hasn't donated a lot of money.  Certainly, she pays a great deal in taxes and a good percentage of that goes to various welfare programs.

It's a SUPPLEMENT.  It's not supposed to be your entire food budget.

I thought it was $29 a person a week? Am I wrong about that?

ETA: Meaning a family of 3 would get about $90 a week, $360 a month. Which is plenty to eat well and healthy.

Its funny and annoying, this whole OP. Those of us who pay for our food find ways to stretch that budget. We buy that oatmeal, or the day old bread, and we make it without "starving", we use coupons, double up, buy in bulk, etc. So done with the sympathy thing.

(Disclaimer: I am just sharing my living experience in the location where I am, so no flames, please.  I am not looking for or asking for any advice, thanks. smile )

I currently live with a $60 a month grocery budget, so that is $15.00 a week.  I do live alone and no, I am not on SNAP.  I cannot qualify for any kind of help because I earn a decent salary before paying my monthly expenses and have a 401K, which qualifies as income in my state.  41% of my monthly take-home pay goes to pay rent alone, since I reside in a high cost of living area.  The other 12 or so bills I pay every month makes my grocery budget a bit tight, but I manage to survive somehow.  I do not eat three meals a day.  I do eat a snack here and there to prevent hypoglycemic symptoms.  But sometimes I forget and get a little "shaky".  I have been surviving for years on a small grocery budget, but I manage to feed myself, although not healthily.  I have a few health issues which I could manage better with a healthier diet, but I do the best as  I can with what I have.  And I don't feel badly about myself.  This is just how life is now.  It may change for the better in the future.  smile

I know there have been other celebs and politicians who have tried to live on SNAP food benefits, and so far, I have yet to hear that they were successful and comfortable with their lifestyle while doing so.  Yes, they want to call attention to what it is like for many who receive benefits, but the fact that they do it for such a short period of time and then fail and go back to their regular lifestyle does not inspire confidence or understanding among those who have to walk the walk day in and day out for extended periods of time.

OMG.  You seriously are going to play the "Hate" card?  That if we comment on what she has purposefully put out there, that now we are "haters" and we are "mean".  Seriously husker?  Wow.  no

I don't know this woman from Adam. I can't name one thing she has ever been or ever done or what she even looks like. But, I COULD manage to eat on $90 a month and survive so that is my bone to pick to with her. The bone that SHE put out there for public fodder. So, yeah.

OH, NOES!

She is Blythe Danner's daughter, married (or not) to Chris Martin (Cold Play), two kids.

She has had roles in: Sliding Doors, the Ironman movies, Glee and Shakespeare in Love.

Probably not that much.  Maybe a few reality TV shows.

Plus, while I may not be able to put a particular song with an artist or TV show or movie with a particular actor--it doesn't mean I "never heard" of them.  Take Drake, for instance.  Don't really know who that guy was.  Can't tell you anything he sings--but hereinafter, I will remember who the guy is because of Madonna planting one on him.

I've never watched Selena Gomez at anything--but I know who she is.

It's just hard to believe you never saw a preview or billboard for any of those movies.  Never caught a glimpse of a magazine cover while waiting in line to check out at the grocery store.  Never saw any "red carpet" events--not even a glimpse of one.  Never caught her name online where it is all over the place.

Well said RTL.

Those who live it every day don't have the ability to cheat or fail with the budget. They wont eat if they don't plan properly.

As for Gwyneth, couldn't name movies she has done. Don't care one way or another about her.

Of course there are lots of actors and actresses I don't know by name but recognize their face when I see it.

I never said I hate her. Truthfully I don't. The only things I know about her are what she puts out in the public. She's an anti vaxer. She believes in eating only organic. She brags about being a size zero and says more women should try to achieve that. She has a blog all about her where she touts the latest and greatest of everything and lists all her organic recipes. She did the conscious uncoupling thing with her husband. She steam cleans her vagina. She has made claims that she totally understands what it's like to be a poor underpaid single mom. And I could go on. So no, I don't HATE her but pardon me for thinking she's a weirdo! Because to me she is! I don't take her seriously. Most of what she does she does for PR.

And this thread wasn't about the "losers" on welfare or how they can't manage money. It was about a PR stunt by Gwyneth Paltrow. IMO, I would have taken her a lot more seriously if she had done something else to show she cared. To me this is like me getting up and preaching about how important it is not to be overweight when I, myself, am overweight. You can't take the person seriously.

So again, not hatred, just don't take her seriously.
