What's it mean to be a man?

This?

That's the question these boys — and a few girls — are thinking about. They're watching one supposedly masculine image after another on TV.

These kids are not buying what they see.

76% of us don't believe in stereotypes, according to research, and 91% of people surveyed think they're harmful. 54% believe they're especially harmful to kids.

These young kids have already figured out that stereotypes aren't real. They see being yourself as more important than fitting someone else's image of what a man is supposed to be.

They're just too busy getting to know themselves. And they like who they're turning out to be.

If that doesn't fit the stereotype, no biggie. The "real men" they see — and the people they're turning out to become — are more interesting than any stereotype.

They see it around their houses.

And their own interests just mean too much to them.

One points out that the idea that only some toys are for boys is silly.

What makes the "perfect man"?

Another boy adds, about the perfect man: "And he likes caring for animals."

These boys and girls have the right idea.

Hopefully their generation is finally growing up in a world where all these senseless limitations no longer apply. Those limitations belong to a past that's passed.

He knows the old rules don't apply.

Workshop Topic: Male Gender Stereotypes

We asked kids to discuss male gender stereotypes in the media.

Can a truck change how people feel about a guy?

Which man is sexier?

Truck.

Truck.

Truck.

That man has way more sex appeal.

For years, the media has perpetuated hyper-masculine stereotypes.

We asked them to list some stereotypes.

That's a man wearing the pants, so that shows that men are in charge.

Manly means to not cry, not be a sissy.

76% of men have used these phrases:

man up you run like a girl be a man

Men work hard and do all the sports and stuff.

Rawrrrr!

Man up means toughen up, and unemotional go through it.

91% of people believe gender stereotypes are harmful.

76% believe these assumption are false.

I like drawing and I like birds and flowers.

Its sort of like very stereotypical to assume that only girls can wear pink and play with princess dolls.

54% of people think it is worse to use stereotypes on children than on adults.

You should be able to do your own things and do what you want.

Some people don't like what the stereotype is.

Self-esteem and body image are also influenced by family and peers.

My brother, he's the same size in clothes as my mom. Sometimes he like wears her shoes, or her jacket or something.

My uncle is a chef, and my dad cooks like all of our food.

Crafting, I love Crafting. Origami sometimes.

And I also like to do all of those things, because that's me, that's who I am.

I Georgia pop. When it was just one other boy, it was just us and four other girls.

2 out of 3 men feel it is acceptable for boys to:

cry wear pink watch princess movies play dress-up

I play with girl toys and boy toys. I don't really care which one is meant for boys or for girls. I just play with them, they're toys.

If I were to describe the perfect man, the words would be smart, not judgeing, and kind.

And he likes caring for animals.

If you try to go against the stereotypes, then you can. When you go your own way, it feels good because you feel free and you can do what you want to do and you don't have to do what other people say.
