Frankly, I'm much more upset by the violence in Baltimore than cakes...

I think a Mom caught her teenage son looting and put a stop to it.

Looks like that to me too.

Yeah. She saw him on the TV and marched herself down into the middle of it and physically pulled him out, smacked him upside the head and took him home.

He is bigger than but that did not stop her from actually being a parent.

Kind of makes me wonder how long he is on lockdown now.

Here's what I found, NJN:

An angry woman is being applauded after she was caught on camera slapping a young man that is reportedly her son and ripping him out of Baltimore riots on Monday.

WMAR-TV captured footage of the woman screaming at the young man dressed from head to toe in black, to "take the mask off" and telling him to "get over here" as she slaps him.

By late Monday night, the video had become so popular that Baltimore Police Commissioner Anthony Batts referenced the incident during a press conference, CBS Baltimore reported. He said that many of the rioters were young people from nearby high schools and he encouraged parents to tell their children to go home.

"And if you saw in one scene, you had one a mother who grabbed their child who had a hood on his head and she started smacking him on the head because she was so embarrassed. I wish I had more parents who took charge of their kids tonight," Batts told reporters. "I think these were youth coming out of the high school and they thought it was cute to throw cinder blocks at the police department, and address it that way."

This mom should be given an award. She should be applauded and held up to all socio economically depressed families as that person to aspire to be. I would love to meet her.

The reason all those kids from a nearby high school were just hanging out is because the city shut down mass transit and they couldn't get home. Epic fail on the part of the city.

I do think the mom was amazing.

They're asking us to wear yellow on Mother's Day to honor her. LOL If I didn't already have my dress picked out, I would.

Let me just say that I wasn't too impressed with the way she chose to present herself on national TV.

You know what, she wasn't even worried about that.  And probably didn't even know she was being filmed.  She was being a good mother.  And I guarantee, that boy won't do it again...

From what I saw, it looks like her main motivation was to ensure the police didn't hurt her son, not to teach her son that looting and rioting was wrong. I only saw part of the interview but that was my take on what I saw. I wish she had made the point that her son was up to no damn good. Instead she focused on wanting to ensure her son wasn't hurt by the police. Both are important. But if he was not out looting, he wouldn't have to worry about the police.

There was a clip that had sound. You could hear her telling him that he was raised better than this and he was told not to go get in the middle of it.

I would like to know where all the other kids parents were. If they had taken the same interest in their kids that neighborhood wouldn't look like a war zone now.

That's good to hear. In the interview she was more concerned that the cops would hurt her son versus being upset with his bad behavior.

As a mom, I'd be both ticked off at the behavior AND scared for their safety.

Agreed. I just found it interesting that she chose to focus on what was out of her son's control instead of what was in his control.

Well, that was after some time to consider the political aspects of it.  I'm glad her first response was regarding his behavior.  The spin was after.

I am glad, no matter the reason, she took enough responsibility for her kid to go get him.

Maybe other parents were at work and didn't have the luxury of watching tv.

I see. A parent actually parents her child and she is probably an out of work no good. Uh huh.

This mom could have done nothing and then made a huge fuss when her son was in jail or dead.

I like that even though she actually took care of her responsibility makes her lazy and out of work.

I see that you were insinuating that a parent that was at work yesterday and not watching the tv, is not interested in their child.  Your quote:

I think she's a good mom and a disciplinarian. He was SCARED. He didn't talk back to her, he didn't tell her to fvck off, he didn't raise a hand to her. He's not a gangster or a thug. He's a wannabe and wanted to be in the action. He even covered his face. He knew what she was going to do if she found out. Total respect...

I just looked at some of the liberal news site. They don't like her. They are accusing the white people that applaud her of racism. But if you're black, it's ok.

From The Salon:

The debate over the moment Graham says she “lost it” is complex. There’s a parallel black debate going on that, as always when it comes to racial issues, is richer and more nuanced. But anyone white who’s applauding Graham’s moment of desperation, along with the white media figures who are hyping her “heroism,” is essentially justifying police brutality, and saying the only way to control black kids is to beat the **** out of them.

I’m aware that a lot of African Americans are lauding Graham, too. This piece isn’t directed at them. Whether they applaud or critique Graham’s corporal punishment, most black people debating the issue acknowledge that the desperate public beating came from centuries of black parents knowing they have to discipline their children harshly, or else white society will do it for them – and they may not survive it.

Still picking at it.

Something has to wrong.

This woman could be a loser on welfare. Could be a fortune 500 member. Who knows?

In this instant, she was a responsible parent doing what needed to be done regardless of who was watching.

She could have easily been arrested. But she cares enough about her child to remove him from a dangerous and criminal situation.

That's a good thing.

Her name is Toya Graham. I'm watching it now.

If you Google "CBS This Morning," you should be able to watch it. She's a single mom of six & a grandmother, and she loves her kids!

I agree with what she did. Totally. When I first saw the story, I was worried for her. Do you know that if you do this in your own home, you can be arrested and charged with domestic violence? She could literally be facing those charges and/or child abuse. Believe me. It happens.
