BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

The father of a convicted sex offender who was killed in a shooting in Cullman County says his son did not deserve to be shot.

"The next thing I heard were three shots and my wife hollering, 'No, no, no'," said Ralph Brooks, recalling the events of Sunday night.

Ralph Brooks says at that moment he went out to his front porch. He then  found his son, 59-year-old Raymond Brooks, dead on the ground next to the house.

Cullman County Sheriff's detectives say 41-year-old Jay Maynor is the one who went to the home and shot and killed Raymond Brooks.

"No, my son didn't deserve it," Ralph Brooks said.

Ralph Brooks says he is not sure why Maynor targeted his son, but he suspects it may be connected to his son's child molestation conviction. In 2002, Raymond Brooks pleaded guilty to molesting a child and had to register as a sex offender. The child he was accused of molesting is related to both Raymond Brooks and Jay Maynor.

"Raymond went to prison and served 27 months with no problems," Ralph Brooks said.

Ralph Brooks says his son turned his life around since the conviction. He says he lived a godly life and was active in his church. Brooks says because the conviction happened so long ago, he's not sure if this was some form of revenge.

"It would be unbelievable to hold animosity in your heart for 12 years," said Brooks.

Cullman County Chief Deputy Max Bartlett says detectives have not determined an exact motive. He says all the facts have not yet been presented to the District Attorney.

"It's pretty bizarre he'd wait that long if that in fact it is what it was, in retaliation for the sexual assault. We don't know that for 100 percent sure. It's tragic for them, too. Regardless of what their son did, they still love their son I'm sure," said Bartlett.

"The judicial system has a job to do. I'm leaving it up to the courts and my Master. That's all I got to say," said Ralph Brooks.

Chief Deputy Bartlett says Maynor is also charged with attempted murder. Maynor is accused of shooting at his step-daughter's boyfriend at a gas station, moments before going to Brooks' home and allegedly shooting and killing him.

So, your son served a paltry 27 months for child molestation and then got on with his life, so why would anyone shoot him? Maybe you should be thinking about whether the child he shot was able to successfully get on with his life. That type of thing can ruin your life - and may be why the family of the victim didn't just "get over it".

Sounds like his normal meter is broken. I hate to say it, but it sounds like molesting children isn't that big of a deal to him, and that is why he doesn't understand.

The kid was related to the shooter! And he still isn't sure if that was the motive.

It might not be the real or only motive, the molested kid might not be his only victim.

The killer shot at his step-daughter's boyfriend first?

There has to be a connection.
