DN has been working for the Catholic hospital here in town for awhile now. She really loves it. She works in the claims/billing department. It would drive me absolutely nuts but she says she loves being able to help people straighten out their bills and claims. However, since the hospital is a Catholic hospital they don't offer birth control on their insurance. I didn't eve think about that when she took the job. But when she got her insurance card there was a note on the back that said, "If you need birth control please call this number..." So she called it. Apparently she can purchase a small rider policy for her insurance directly through the insurance company for three dollars a month. This rider policy covers ONLY birth control. Her regular insurance covers maternity (if she needed it) and well woman visits. All the rider covers is actually birth control.
I thought this was really interesting. Not only because it affected her but because it's such an easy fix to the problem everyone is screaming about. The hospital gets to stand their ground on their beliefs, which I believe they have a right to! And DN gets birth control, which I also believe she has a right to! No one is forced into anything. The insurance acts as a third party go between kind of. And interestingly enough the birth control insurance is better than if it were added to the regular insurance. There is no copay and they cover any method 100%.
Just thought I'd share this and people could share thoughts.

Yeah, I guess it made me wonder why more places don't do this! Nobody should be forced to do something they are uncomfortable with. I firmly believe that. But you also have to look at the other side. She's really happy too because she has that implant in her arm. It's about three grand but it lasts for three years. She's coming up on the time she needs to get it switched out.

I wish more people knew this. Might shut a few people up.
I know. It seems too good to be true. And maybe this belongs on another thread but she's like "I've already told my b/f no babies until there's a ring on my finger." She's pretty smart.

Sounds like an easy solution. I'm sure someone will still bitch.
Well, she was using my GYN until she retired last summer. We just found out she's coming back out of retirement but she's severely limiting her practice. DN says that there's a really small pool of people who will accept the birth control rider. I told her just find someone halfway decent because she really only needs to see them once every three years. She can use her regular doc for everything else unless some specific problem comes up.

I mean honestly, how often do you see your GYN? I only go when I absolutely have to.

I only go to my ENT when I have a problem. Preventative well woman care at ENTs are not widespread.
My GYN - always a well woman visit 1 x year. And there is that thing called a pap smear.
I have seen too many women give up their GYN visits after childbirth is over only to get nasty surprises that could have been found earlier and are now incurable.
