When I was a kid, we always kept real butter in a butter dish sitting out. It was soft and supple and easy to spread. Nowadays, the butter is not as soft as it used to be. Did something change about it?
We keep real butter in the fride. But margarine is kept on the counter.
It basically oil.

We keep our real butter in the refrigerator just because it gets too soft if left out. I haven't used margarine in 30 years and as a result, my cellulite I had at 18 miraculously disappeared.

I thought if I kept it out it would be soft enough to spread on toast, but it still really isn't so might as well just keep it in the fridge. But, I dont' buy margarine.
We put it on the stove while cooking. It softens up nicely.

Real butter comes from the butcher or friends farms.
Or we make it.

I guess we don't use butter enough to have to have it soft. I'll use it in cooking sometimes, but mostly use ghee which doesn't have to be refrigerated and is easier to measure in teaspoons. Mr. FNW will use butter on his toast, but we only have toast once or twice a week. I'll add it to #2's veggies on occasion, but mostly he prefers his veggies raw and if I cook them for us, I usually add whatever sauce I'm making for the main course and pour over the veggies for flavor, or I'll do something with the veggies like gratin, roasted with balsamic, etc. #1 likes his steamed with just a touch of salt, no butter.
I use real butter & keep it in the fridge. I spread it on my English muffin & then put it back in the toaster oven. I don't turn it back on it is still warm enough to melt the butter. Other than that I use it to cook. I love butter!
Butter is much better for you than margarine and really not more calories. I keep mine out in a covered dish as well. I lost weight eating butter, cream, cheese and....
Bacon!
Fresh, hot biscuits with hand churned butter and home made apple jelly is Heaven on earth.

Try making butter. Put heavy whipping cream in a jar, you can sit and shake while watching tv. It's really yummy with orange zest on cranberry scones. :)
