A 71-year-old Illinois woman has been arrested after allegedly admitting that she killed her grandchildren's cat and four kittens with a hammer because they wouldn't clean their rooms.
Josephine Bell, of Godfrey, told police she threatened to take her grandchildren's animals away as punishment if their didn't tidy their rooms, adding that she didn't think it was her responsibility to take care of the felines.
An officer arrived at a home reported for animal cruelty on Monday and spoke to a teenager who said she had found her dead cat in the freezer.

So the kittens can't be found but charge her with it any way.
Did the cat die a quick death? Putting it in the freezer screams mental issues to me. But I just don't see using resources because someone killed a cat. If it was done quickly then there is no difference in that and putting it down.
But the woman needs help sounds like.
Why is she raising 4 grandkids?

Lily - this response is insane. She killed a cat and 4 kittens in front of her grandchildren as punishment - that is sick, twisted, and shows a depraved mind. It was both cruelty to animals and the children.
Furthermore - yes, they can charge her anyway because there is enough evidence without the bodies of the 4 kittens.

She didn't do it in front of the kids. The grand daughter found the cat in the freezer. If the granddaughter had witnessed it, wouldn't she have known before it was in the freezer?
I'm not saying the woman isn't twisted.
What I am saying is put her in the right place.
She needs a mental facility. Not a jail.

You don't know that. She could just be an evil bitch. And I don't really care where she is as long as she's not still in the house with the kids.

I would be more concerned about the emotional damage she has done to the children rather than worrying about the cats. But that's just me. I put a higher price on humans than animals.

We have animal cruelty laws for a reason. I don't think killing them with a hammer was quick or painless and she deserves to be brought up on animal cruelty as well as child abuse charges.

The cruelty to animals is the crime she committed - getting her on that gets her away from the kids.
And people who are cruel to animals are showing their true colors.

How about grandma puts Monster down with a hammer in front of you and your kids?

Well. Since my kids do their chores and my mom is not insane, it isn't necessary.
And if either of you or Flan would bother reading in whole. You would see I said gma was insane. Maybe not those exact words.
I don condone killing animals like that.

You stated that resources shouldn't be used because someone killed a cat. By that I took it to mean that she shouldn't be charged and waste court time with this nonsense. You also stated that it was no different then putting an animal down. I'm confused by what you meant then. I can read just fine.

Just because you don't think something rises to the level of a crime doesn't mean you condone it or want it to happen. It just means you don't think it is as big of a deal as some others might.

Well, I could agree with you--but then we'd both be wrong.
But animals are animals. I don't value them above people.
The kids in that house need a stable family. This was a terrible thing to happen and they will never forget it.
But at the end of the day, the kids are safe. It was a cat.
Perspective.

What if it was a dog??? It was someone's pet! I'm sorry you can't grasp that. You obviously don't love your animals if you think this is no big deal. It is a crime. Just because you don't agree with that too bad.

Well whether you condone it or not, it's a crime. So I don't care if you don't think it's a big deal.
So we can't be horrified that she hammered a cat and kittens to death and also care about the kids? I think both the animals and the kids deserve better.

Yeah. I think I care more about the kids than Lily or Husker does. To them it's just another day. Ugh.

Your. On concern has NOT been the kids--it's been the cats. She isnt being charged with cruelty to kids, either.

She should be charged with child abuse (as I said up thread) because this was psychological abuse to those kids. Killing a cat with a hammer is about as vicious a way to kill it as I can imagine. We have these laws for a reason. For sickos like this is an excellent reason to use them.

Yes it has. Go back and read. My posts show concern for the kids and the pets.
When I was a kid my cat got hit by a car. I didn't watch it happen bus saw the dead body on the side of the road. I didn't know who did it & knew it was an accident. I was still in tears for days. I can't imagine how inconsolable I would have been if I knew my grandmother did it on purpose as punishment for me not doing my chores. Let alone the 4 baby kittens too. That is a heavy load to lay on those kids. It is ****ty & cruel.

I totally agree. And I'm sorry that happened to you.

You obviously do care because youve been bitching about it for half a dozen posts or more.

Kids living on farms see this stuff all the time. Ever see someone wring a chicken's neck? Or shot a deer or a rabbit?
They're not living on a farm. And those aren't pets!
A lot of farm kids raise animals as pets. Then they eat them. I've seen animals killed. I don't have any psychological issues.
Well I would hope that if your grandkids ever got a cat or dog that you wouldn't take it upon yourself to bludgeon it to death if they were bad and then leave it in the freezer for them to find. I don't care what you saw.

No. I honestly don't care what you think. I'm just letting MY feelings be known.

Of course I wouldn't do that! But I think the wrong charges are being brought against her...
