I don't like them, but I don't wish any ill will towards them. That said, pedophiles rarely change their tune. If he likes touching young girls, that urge hasn't gone away. It will return some day in the same way it did before. The recidivism rate of pedophiles, even those who willingly get treatment, is scarily high.
How old were the girls? Are you really labeling a 17 year old boy a pedophile? Because if so, that is going to apply to a LOT of boys and men.
I am calling him a pedophile if his victims were significantly younger than him, yes. If they were within a few years of him, then no. But if they were 8 or 9 as some are stating then yes. He is a pedophile. Touching an 8 year old on the genitals while she is sleeping qualifies in my book.
This would have started (that we know) when he was 14. Actually - it probably started younger, with the kids doing "you show me yours, I'll show you mine". There are no details to rely on to determine what actually happened.
This is why juvenile records are supposed to be sealed. And it isn't even a record - it was reported, but never investigated or charged.

He committed the abuse while the children were sleeping. He touched their genitals while they slept. That isn't "playing doctor" and it isn't "show me yours and I will show you mine". It's abuse. He was 14 - more than old enough to know it was wrong. That's a freshman in high school. They know not to touch people sexually who are sleeping! If the girls were around his age, it was abuse/rape. If the children were substantially younger than him, he is a pedophile.

A 14 year old's brain is not even fully developed - that is way too young to determine he is a pedophile for life.

Honestly, if he wasn't a Duggar, some people wouldn't be screaming pedophile they'd be screaming for therapy. Now the hypocrisy is a different matter and I think that's motivating these attacks on him. But be honest...that's why there's such glee when a religious leader is caught with his pants down. We respond to the hypocrisy.

I am all for him getting therapy, don't get me wrong. And I take no relish in his situation. In fact, my first post on this thread was very supportive. After the facts came out, I formed more of an opinion. I definitely think he should get therapy. But I also don't think I would let him around young girls alone.

I'm sad that the show was pulled. So now I guess we must judge everyone for the crappy decisions they made when they were kids.
I think it's more about the way the parents handled it - which was criminal if you ask me. They didn't get him psychological help, they sent him to work with a family friend in construction for the summer and they did physical labor and read bible verses. That isn't counselling. It's a summer job.

I'm sad too. It's one of my favorite shows. It's so refreshing to watch a show that isn't afraid to stand up for Christian values. I'm shocked that Josh would do such a thing but I do commend him for owning his actions.
“Good people make mistakes and do regrettable and even disgusting things. The reason that the law protects disclosure of many actions on the part of a minor is that the society has traditionally understood something that today’s blood-thirsty media does not understand — that being a minor means that one’s judgement is not mature,” Huckabee said. “Those who have enjoyed revealing this long ago sins in order to discredit the Duggar family have actually revealed their own insensitive bloodthirst, for there was no consideration of the fact that the victims wanted this to be left in the past and ultimately a judge had the information on file destroyed — not to protect Josh, but the innocent victims.” Mike Huckabee

Josh Duggar yesterday resigned from Family Research Council and issued a statement saying he had “acted inexcusably” and was “deeply sorry” for “my wrongdoing” following reports he had been investigated for allegedly molesting several underage girls when he also was underage. In a statement posted on Facebook yesterday, Duggar, now 27, said that 12 years ago he “acted inexcusably for which I am extremely sorry and deeply regret” and that he “confessed this to my parents who took several steps to help me address the situation.”
He added: “We spoke with the authorities, where I confessed my wrongdoing, and my parents arranged for me and those affected by my actions to receive counseling. I understood that if I continued down this wrong road that I would end up ruining my life. I sought forgiveness from those I had wronged and asked Christ to forgive me and come into my life.”
His statement was posted hours after In Touch magazine said it had obtained a redacted report from the Springdale Police Department in Arkansas, allegedly showing Josh’s father, Jim Bob, waited more than a year before taking his teenage son to Arkansas State Police over the allegations. Police did not see through an investigation.
Josh Duggar also resigned yesterday from his position as executive director of the lobbying arm of the Family Research Council.
In that same Facebook post, Duggar’s parents Jim Bob and Michelle said: “Back 12 years ago our family went through one of the most difficult times of our lives. When Josh was a young teenager, he made some very bad mistakes and we were shocked. We had tried to teach him right from wrong. That dark and difficult time caused us to seek God like never before. Even though we would never choose to go through something so terrible, each one of our family members drew closer to God.”

Well, that was my point. I thought juvenile records were private??
BTW, what should he do NOW? Is his life over? He has apologized and repented. I assume that this was dealt with in some way. What should he do today? Does he now have no hope to live a good life? Should he commit suicide?
I think a lot of the anger is from his complete lack of empathy. Instead of saying, you know, I struggled with my sexuality, he instead has sat in judgment of teens.
But in general I'm appalled that this story ever hit the news.

The guy was a minor, he got counseling, was punished and apologized.
I think it's ridiculous that this was allowed to be told.

They are supposed to be. The police screwed up twice - the first time not following up, the second time allowing a reporter access to a juvenile's police report.

People are accusing the parents of a 'cover up". Well, what are they SUPPOSED to do? Come out and make a public announcement? It sounds like they made attempts to handle it. And, it sounds like they did handle it and there were no further incidents reported. And, they actually did talk to the Police. No charges were filed and this in the past. It sounds like it was more fondling and he didn't rape them and there was no penetration. Not excusing that in anyway. But, I think there is a difference between copping a feel and going to the next level. Apparently, whatever help they got him worked and he is now living a productive life taking care of his family.
The big Thrill in this for the media and the Left is that supposedly if Christians have issues of sin in their lives, then somehow that supposedly negates the entire message of Christianity. That if Christians are not perfect, then therefore Christianity doesn't work or is a fraud. They really enjoy that type of thing. When in reality, they don't understand the message of Christianity at all. It doesn't create Perfect people.

That's not it for me at all. At all.
To me, it's their continual sexist attitudes towards women, coupled with the belief that you can pray away stuff like this. They teach that women must be subservient to men. And in this case, they didn't keep the girls in their own family safe. They sent the perpetrator of the abuse to a summer job and when he got home and apologized, the girls had to sit and listen and accept his apology. Not to mention continue to live in the house with their abuser. The parents went out of their way to protect their son but did virtually nothing to protect their daughters - one of whom was 5 when the abuse happened. He touched the girls on their genitals while they were sleeping. This wasn't playing doctor. This was calculated and purposeful. And mom and dad sent him to a summer job, called it counseling, and let him live side by side with the children he abused because he prayed about it and listened to some bible verses.
Thats my problem with it.

This situation really calls into question why they started a reality show to become celebs. Celebrities are scrutinized, past and present. Did they think this would not come out? Or did they assume it would thinking it would add intrigue to their show?

These actions were not Christian in any way shape or form. If they cared about their children the way CHRIST cared about children or women, they would have done everything in their power to provide help to their DAUGHTERS, the actual victims of this crime.
Nope...not Christian in any way.

I think they probably would have woken when touched, but I didn't see that the Duggars did not get the girls counseling or help. I was just wondering if that was mentioned somewhere.
The counselling they got their son wasn't counselling, it was work on a construction site with a friend who read him bible verses afterwards. They believed that was counselling. So if they say they got the girls counselling, I am not apt to believe it was true psychological help.

I have a friend who had something very similar happen to her when she was on vacation and sharing a room with her brothers. She was about 16 and the one brother was about 13 when she woke to him touching her. She pretended to stay asleep and try to roll over, but he kept at it until she pretended to start waking up- then he left. She told her dad about it the next day and he flipped out on her brother.
I don't really have a point to share that, except it might be more common than we know.. or it might just be a coincidence.
