This! I am so tired of being told or hear people saying that. I've heard/had conversations that if the someone didn't like the president or other political figures or celebrities because they were racist, homophopbic, transgender phobic, anti religious, etc. For example, I don't like our mayor because he's a liar and a crook and because of loopholes has gotten away with it, so I'm racist. How many threads have we had where parents of mentally ill children TRY to get help only to find there is none. They took him to a police officer - I suppose they could have kept harping on the police "WHY AREN'T YOU LOCKING UP MY KID????" Maybe they could have locked him in a closet to sleep at night, but wait - parents get arrested for that kind of thing. They could have maybe called family services and had him taken away, where they wouldn't be able to watch him or parent him.

Heck, maybe they should have hung him by his fingernails and castrated him.

This was a young teenage boy - they chose to parent him.

I do not think taking him to a religious leader is enough. A pastor is not trained in psychological issues. They are helpful for marriage counselling (as it relates to their faith) and for moral guidance. They are not trained to deal with mental health issues. The schooling of a pastor is based on the religious teachings of their denomination. Not in counselling and not in mental health issues. Some pastors don't have a college degree. Why would a pastor be qualified to counsel someone who is touching his 5 year old sister's genitals?!

I don't think it requires a crystal ball. Just some common sense. If my child had questions of a moral nature I would take her to a pastor. If she had a psychological problem I would take her to a psychologist or psychiatrist. If her leg hurt I would take her to an orthopedist. If her teeth hurt I would take her to a dentist. It really is not complex thinking.

And that is what he needed - moral guidance and sex education and counseling on what is right and wrong. I don't see someone touching a 5 year old on her genitals as just a moral issue. It goes WAY beyond that. But that's just my opinion, clearly they can handle it however they want. I just think they failed their family by allowing him to continue to do and him having to tell the parents 3 times about it before getting him help.

Well to me that's like saying I prayed about my fever and my fever went away! Praying cures fevers! You may have gotten lucky, but that doesn't prove a cause and effect relationship.

Taking him to a mental health professional doesn't guarantee anything more than taking him to a pastor. What you (general you) would have done doesn't guarantee anything either. It must be nice to ALWAYS know the exact right thing that should have been done when you weren't even there.

Well...after reading all the reports and articles here are my thoughts...

The Duggars are effing crazy. I think the way they bring up their children is bizarre, but not legally wrong. I just don't agree with it.

It sounds like a teenage boy with hormones that was raised in a crazy secluded household was curious and did some touching. Yes it was wrong, but I don't think it was criminal.

You realize that if some totally non famous family came out on the news because their son had fondled five girls over their clothes people here would be laughing it off and saying this is not the end of the world. They would say, send the boy to counseling and watch him. He is not destined to become a rapist. People are making it more than it is and because it is the Duggars.

And where is the sympathy for the minors whose information was released? I don't see any of that here.

I, for one, cannot imagine having 4 children, let alone 19. I would rather rip my hair out than homeschool. I would NEVER want to be on a reality show. None of those are decisions I would make. But a lot of people make decisions that would not be for me. That doesn't make them crazy.

Sorry, I am not a Duggar fan. I don't hate them. I just think they're very strange. They're self supportive so I have no problem with them doing whatever they want because it's legal. IMO, no matter what they say, I don't think those kids are getting quality time with each individual parent. I say that because I'm a parent and I know how hard that is and I don't have 19. Other than that I don't really care about this family in the sense that they're not doing anything wrong and not hurting me or others. Go for it. Live your life.

However, the sex scandal is solely because people hate the Duggars. That is THE ONLY REASON this is news. There are many families that have much much worse sexual things happen that no one even cares about.

Some people hate the Duggars and have been waiting for a chance to laugh at them and say what bad people they are.

Maybe you should watch the interview with the parents. They said they sent him to the "work camp", took him to the police station and had him talk to a policemen (who later turned out to be a pedophile), and had him talk to the pastor. He told them about touching his sisters and they felt like they took care of it. They put a security system in to watch the girls. Later on he touched some other girls that weren't related to him when they were in his home and he told his parents. They took further steps. They DID address it. Did you want them to throw him out on the streets at 15? Do you realize how many non Duggar families have this, and worse, happen, and they just totally ignore it? I am not condemning them.

flan, every time we have a Duggar thread your disgust of the family is obvious. We get that you don't like them. But I tell you what. Unless you have ever been in their situation you don't have the right to judge.

You CAN get cancer from premarital sex. It's caused by a sexually transmitted virus - HPV - and that causes cervical cancer.
