Emma is the most popular baby name in the U.S., with parents in 22 states choosing it for their newborn girls.
It trumps Noah, the most popular name for American boys, which was only the top pick in nine states. according to new data from the Social Security Administration.
The ascendancy of Emma follows 11 years in the top 3 names for girls. It took the top spot in 2008, and also in the newly-released statistics recording baby names in 2014.

Massachusetts, Texas, Virginia and Pennsylvania were among the populous states which chose Emma above all other names.
For boys, Noah was the top pick in states including California, Texas, Florida and Illinois, though Liam, Mason, Jacob and William also won the hearts of parents in many other states.
The new information, published on the administration's website, shows a pronounced difference in taste across the country.

Data: The information on baby names was released by the Social Security Administration
For boys, Noah swept the Southwest and also took Florida, while William was the favorite for many southern states, including Alabama, Arkansas, Tennessee and Georgia.
An earlier tranche of data, which gave the name details without a state-by-state breakdown, also revealed that British aristocratic names were swinging back into favor.
Charlotte, the name both Chelsea Clinton and Kate Middleton chose for their new daughters, made the top ten. Meanwhile James, another name with Royal favor, crept into 9th position.
My daughter is bummed that she can never find her name when they have personalized stuff. Is Marcy that much out of vogue now?
It's actually seeing a surge right now - but has never been a very common name. It has never cracked the top 200 before, although it is on track for that the first time this year, with a ranking so far of 186.
If I could sire children, I would most certainly give them Welsh names, and if they are in the States, I would give them the more popular Welsh names which are easier to pronounce and spell. Otherwise it will be chaos. In the UK, it would not matter greatly. I also take into account the meaning behind the names. My name is Welsh, and is very uncommon here. Very few people can pronounce it correctly, much less spell it. When I say it, people respond with "What?". Of course, in the UK, still not a popular name, but no raised eyebrows there. LOL I myself definitely do not want a common name. I am an uncommon type of being. My name reflects that. And I have no family, so no traditions to follow in the naming department.
Emma is also the name of the heroine on Once Upon a Time.
I would have thought Bella would have won out in our state.
I really thought hard about naming Caitlyn, Penelope. I love it. But I found Caitlyn in a book I was reading. Caitlyn was a Celtic warrior in the book. And it is a spin on an a great aunts name. And I didn't want her to be stuck with Penny. Grew up with a Penny.
I still love Penelope.

DD is named Kate. Not Katherine, not Katie. We all loathe Katie. When people call her Katie, she politely corrects them. She started doing that at about age 2. "It's just Kate please, not Katie". I know several Roberts who loathe Bob, an Edward not an Ed, and a Vincent who hates Vince or Vinny. They all seem to ma age to get people to call them by the name they prefer.
If you like a name, use it. Your and your child can correct people who don't call them by their name and it won't "stick" unless the child chooses to answer to it.
My Kate actually broke up with a boy who called her Katie when he was mad at her. She thought that was a low blow and an indicator of what he really thought about her.

Conor is actually Wayne Conor. I didn't want confusion between Conor and his Dad, so he has always gone by his middle name.
Mere is Meredith Lesley.
And the youngest is Paul William. He is named after me, my Dad, and Wayne's Dad.
I like their names. Not too common. But, not too out there, either.
Oh, I like Mere and Meridith. That is pretty. We thought our DD was going to be a BOY as I had 2 ultrasounds that confirmed that! So, her name was supposed to be Charles Elijah! lol We came up with Marcy on the fly.

I don't see that as a problem. So what?
Just making the point that naming your kid something cute because it matches the rest of the family is shortsighted. Kourtney with a K hated her name being spelled that way and complained about it every chance she got. Until the Kardashians came about, there were not a lot of other K Courtneys known where she grew up. But it was CUTE darn it! Lol.

Thanks LGS. We like their names, too.
What a surprise for you on the ultrasound.
My first two were shy. We didn't know what they were, until they were born.
We had a pretty good idea with Paul. But my doctor warned us, that sometimes the ultrasound is wrong.
In his case, it was right. (Good thing too. We didn't have a girls name picked out!)
We have a very German last name. So, when I told my sister the name of our first child, Conrad, she said, "Oh, that sounds like the name of a German SS Officer"! LOL!
My brother thought my younger niece was a boy until she was born. They had planned to name the baby boy Tyler. They quickly switched it to Taylor. She is one of about a million Taylors now.
My name is not common, and never has been. I have met two my entire life, one spelled it differently, but pronounced it the same, and one spelled it the same but said it differently.

Same with DS1...he is actually LAW III. I hated the thought of him being a "number," but DH1 really had his heart set on it, so I gave in. I'm glad I did.
Throughout grade school & junior high, DS told people his name was "A" not "L," but by high school, he changed his mind. I respect his decision, but to family, he will always be "A."
my lady's name is celtic/gaelic and is pronounced " KEER--aay " ( am not gonna tell you how she spells it )--the only lady have ever met with that name

Caitlyn is Celtic form of Kathryn.
The only change I made was a Y instead of an I. Lynn is a name shared by my dad, me, and my brother. I wanted to include it in her name as well.

I named my DD after her 2 great grandmothers Sarah and Margaret. I always loved the name Sarah and when I finally heard that was my Grandma's name (she was always just Grandma until then)I knew I'd name a daughter that.

Not MACY but MARCY
Oops. Sorry.
See, I noticed the chart I used was only up to 1988, so I went back and searched for the more recent years and it must have changed it to Macy b/c the use of Marcy since after 1988 is so negligible as to not be in the rankings.
The name peaked in the 1970s.

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.
I love name talk. I think names are so interesting.
We went with both A names for my girls. DH's mom named all of her kids with A names so we continued in the tradition for her (actually, we found a name we liked for DD7 and it happened to start with an A and his family was so happy we stuck with the tradition, we didn't have the heart to tell them we didn't mean to).
Lee is a family name- it is my mom's middle name, my middle name and DD7's middle name. I picked Grace for Baby A's middle name, just because I've always liked it.
I don't know what we will do if we ever have a boy. DH does not like any boys names. He didn't even have any he would consider. He also does not want a Jr. so that's out, even though I really like his name.

Lily, I also love the name Penelope but would be loath to use because I wouldn't want her called Penny.
I have a coworker that just had a baby. He told us before she was born that they were going to name her "Penny". I told him he couldn't do that he has to name her Penelope and call her Penny. So the kid has me to thank if she also would loath Penny lol
Raymond is a family name for my dad's family. My parents were told I was a boy, so my middle name was to be Raymond. Shocker for them, so my middle name became Rae. I'd only met one other person with the name, until I started this job. There are two other woman who's middle name is Rae :)
I know a baby William, and a baby Charlotte born this year.
My VSS SIL named the baby she just had Charlotte. Two weeks later when the Princess was born she got really pissed off and said they stole her name. She had a massive FB temper tantrum melt down.
My first DH and I had names that started with the same letter and named our kids nice normal names that started with the same letter. They were not spelled weird or anything. I like their names.
My name is so unusual. I think the last time LL looked it up there were like three of us in the whole world. Something like that. And the only reason there were that many is because when I married DH I got a nice normal last name. Not a weird German last name like my ex. When I had his name I was the only one with my name.

I have a daughter named Sarah and I hate that name. Her dad got to the birth certificate first and both her first and middle names are on my names I hate list. I call her by a nickname. I told him no no no no no and he still did it. That may well be the moment our marriage started failing. Who does that?!?!?
My apologies to any geeks named Sarah.

Lesson learned in February: I don't have to keep up, I just have to keep moving!
My cousin's wife is named after her dad's girlfriend. Her mom had a rough birth and was out of it for a while after she was born. Her dad swooped in and named the baby after his current girlfriend (yes, the woman he was cheating on his pregnant wife with)
