Dear Miss Manners: How do i load the Dishwasher?

DEAR MISS MANNERS: I like to load the dishwasher with the silverware facing down. My mother prefers face up. While we can all argue about who is correct, that's not my question. I know I'm right.

When my mother, who frequents my home, helps clean up by loading the dishwasher, she insists on loading it her way. I've asked several times for her to load it my preferred way. After all, this is my house, and if her goal is to help, cutting my hand on a sharp knife isn't very helpful.

Her response is that I'm ungrateful and should appreciate her help. Who is right?

GENTLE READER: Since you've already stated that you are, Miss Manners finds herself hesitant to cross you -- especially since you already have blood quite literally on your hands.

Just as you are certain that you are correct, so is your mother, and it doesn't seem likely that either of you is going to back down. Why don't you agree to load your own dishes in your own homes -- and ask for help with serving those dishes instead?

Dear Miss Manners:

What is the proper way to hang a roll of toilet paper? My mother & I vehemently disagree. When she comes to my house, she changes the rolls in all 7 of my bathrooms.

Should I cut her out of my life?

DD annoys me when she loads because she crams all the silver in one or two compartments and leaves the rest empty.

Yay! Silverware wars!!!!!!!!!!! Of course silverware should in downwards. When you empty it, if the handles aren't "up" you are contaminating the end of the silverware with your filthy germs, the same ends that go into your loved ones' mouth. How dare you behave in such a neglectful manner.

Funny. DH used to say silverware up. Claims his grandfather, who was a dishwasher repair man, told him the ware was cleaned better if they were up and exposed. After about 8 years of putting up with that, I mentioned it to his mother. She looked at DH and said, "not true. I don't know where you heard that." Now it goes in down.

Our caddy is removed from the dishwasher and then flips open, too. (It's on the door). 99% of the time DH unloads the dishwasher at night before we go to bed, so it's not a major issue for us.

According to Dept. of Health food inspectors, silverware should go mouth down, so the person unloading the clean product will only touch the handles. Restaurants can rack up points against them if their dishwashes are loaded incorretly.

Now, LL, what is the problem with the coke?

When buying a coke at the checkout line, what do you do when all the names are not people you want to share a coke with?

Names? I haven't seen this yet. Is it some sort of ad campaign, to "share" your bottle with Sam, or Mary, or Sue?

How do you load the dishwasher?

Step one, open the door.

Step two, remove the elephant. (The giraffe doesn't fit.)smile
