I normally am.  Except when it's blatant racism.  That actually does exist, you know.

As I said, if she had simply said "we can't give unopened cans to passengers" and went with that - ok.  But to blatantly apply that policy to this woman while NOT to another man and then tell her she could use is as a weapon?  Really?

I don't see racism. I see someone wanting to turn a Big Nothing into a Big Something.

And then to exacerbate it by doing NOTHING while another passenger berates her cursing and using racist language against her in front of everyone. It's horrible and blatant.

The other passenger's actions were not nice. But, there are lots of Not Nice People in the world.

Wow.  Those are big blinders you have.

Not surprising - she's Muslim.

I routinely ask for a can of tomato juice and a cup of ice. They sometimes pop the top of the can for me, usually not.

Well, it's a good thing only unopened cans of diet coke can be used as weapons!  You could have taken out the whole plane!

Shake it up and then open it while pointed at other people's eyes?

That works for the different treatment of tomato juice, but not beer......hmmm.

Diet coke has artificial sweeteners and therefore is chemically stronger and makes the can harder?

Yes, I did. But no one answered my question -

"Do you really think a full can of beer would hurt less than a full can of coke if you got bonked over the head with it?"

Sorry, I missed that.

So you bonk one person? Then get taken down by the other passengers?

Don't know.  Not a Muslim woman.  Obviously, they have secret ninja skills related to cans of Diet Coke.

I would think EMPTY cans would be more dangerous, if you could manage to cut or tear one apart and use the jagged edge.

I can't think of any tools that would be accessible to a passenger that would facilitate cutting or otherwise opening the can to get a jagged edge.

If there WAS something like that in the passenger cabin, it would probably be a better weapon than the aluminum can.

I will have to look on my next trip, but can't you buy a can of soda after security?

I've been given full, unopened cans of soda on flights. Usually United, too. Guess I'm not much of a threat. Or maybe only diet coke is threatening?

I think it might depend on the individual airline too. Not sure they all have the same policies.

The flights I have been on, they open the can, pour it into a glass and hand you the glass. They can get 2 glasses of soda out of one can. It's a cost saving measure. It costs them too much money to just hand each passenger a can of soda. The only flights I have been on where they will give you the can without asking are flights to Europe.

I assumed the danger was the jagged metal edge as well...BUT I can now fly with tweezers and nail clippers.

Crush the can. Then open it back up again and work it back and forth until it rips open. It only takes about a minute or less.

 Quite.  Let's see, United's policies -

Crying babies are a threat.

Young autistic girls are a threat.

Muslim women getting full diet coke cans is a threat, while men getting full beer cans is not a threat.

Belligerent passengers who yell racist obscenities at other passengers - not a threat.

I've received cans of cranberry juice to go with my vodka. But if I were denied, I doubt I'd raise a fuss.
