A 13-year-old boy has been charged after allegedly taking $25,000 from his grandfather and distributing the money to classmates before blowing it during a shopping spree.

The unidentified teenager from Medina was charged with juvenile delinquency by way of theft from the elderly earlier this week, Medina County Prosecutor Dean Holman told Cleveland.com.

Another boy, 14, who was allegedly given a portion of the money and passed it on to his grandparents was charged with juvenile delinquency by way of receiving stolen property.

The younger boy, who lives with his mother and grandfather, allegedly stole the money from the 83-year-old man's bedside table.

He brought the money to Claggett Middle School and handed out $100 bills to classmates, police said.

Afterwards, he took the remaining cash and spent it on several pricey items, including a television set, with the help of the 14-year-old boy, the boy's grandparents and another adult, Fox 8 reported.

Police were tipped to the theft by the 13-year-old boy's teachers, though by then most of the money had been spent or given away.

Authorities were able to recover more than $7,000, as well as much of the purchases made by the group.

Included in the haul was more than $4,000 worth of gift cards, according to police.

According to the Medina Gazette, authorities have not announced whether or not the adults involved would face charges.

Claggett Middle School's principal, TJ Hellickson, would only say that the school is co-operating with law enforcement.

Shame on the adults who accepted and spent the money. Of course they should be charged in this case - why is it even a question?! Ridiculous.

And the poor grandfather. What a shock to realize your trust had been violated like that. But keeping that much cash in the nightstand was a risky/stupid decision.

The adults are ridiculous. A young teenager come in with thousands of dollars and they think the right thing to do is take him shopping?!

I agree. If my child brought home that much money I would question it and make him/her return it to the parents or grandfather in this case.

Why is grandpa keeping that much cash in his house? Is he a doomsday prepper or something?

On the other hand, the adults should have known better. No kid shows up with that kind of money ever.  no

Great way to ruin your relationship with Gramps, kid.

Sad.
