This is another example of "just because you can, doesn't mean you should."

I fail to see why this is news worthy. So she's valedictorian. So she's gay.

Maybe it is time to stop having students do speeches.
Not to mention it would shorten the time you had to sit in those uncomfortable seats.

So if a straight girl got up there and said she lost her virginity this year and slept with ten boys and how proud she was that we live in a country where she could talk about this then we would all applaud her? I mean, this IS HER platform after all. Her chance to shine and lay it all on the table.
Again, not the right venue or time.

And if a student wanted to get up and talk about how they loved gun rights and how they were gifted a handgun, a rifle, and a pistol and they had shot two deer and several other wild life, we should praise them? For having the courage to talk about what they believe in and what makes them who they are?
I call bullchit on this. Wrong time, wrong place.

I wonder how many straight girls who happened to share the locker room with her were creeped out and felt violated.
Excellent question! Aww wait...it wouldn't matter because they're straight.

Yeah, pretty much. But what does it matter? It's all about HER HER HER!

I don't understand the brave thing. If someone's sexuality isn't supposed to matter in how they are treated then why feel the need to tell everyone? So not the right time to bring it up.

Obviously, in America, sexuality DOES matter. How many threads have we had here on homosexual marriage, for example?
I really don't understand this burning need to come out publicly. I've known a lot of gay people, both men and women, and having them "officially" announce their orientation was never a surprise. Most people already know, they aren't fooling anyone.
Her sexual preferences are no one else's business.
I don't know why that is hard to understand.
I think once she brought it up, she should have been turned off.
Of course that wasn't going to happen cause it would be called "homophobic".
But had that been someone saying God was their strength, it would have been shut down without a word.

Only non-traditional sex matters in America. If you're straight no one wants to hear about your sexual preferences so why the need for homosexuals to tell the world.

When someone comes up to you at work, do you automatically wonder about their sexuality? Do you think they wonder about yours?
I know when I am talking to someone, it doesn't even cross my mind.
So why do we have to make announcannounannouncements? If it is truly just who they are, why would it need announced any more than eye color or preferences in candy?

It has become a hip thing to do. Honestly, I do not look at her as being all that brave. Especially now that it is more accepted then it use to be. I'm sure all her friends and classmates already knew she is gay so she already knew how the audience will react.

Yeah, right.

Yeah, right.
Frankly:
I DON'T CARE whether you believe me or not, but I am NOT LYING.

If you say so.

So would you agree someone stating that they were Christian they were making it all about themselves and should have the mic turned off.
The difference is this.
Giving God glory for helping you through is no where near making it about yourself like announcing you are gay.
One is giving credit, one is simply about self.
The point however, is that if the speech had said thank God, the call for blood would be deafening.
But this is something extremely personal.
No one else's business.

Had she said, I am a heterosexual, would you have wondered why she felt the need to announce it?
To me, it's the same thing.
Why does it matter that she is gay?

Well, that's the thing. The school can forbid them but once they are up there on the Podium they can still pretty much do or say whatever they want to. But , hijacking every event for YOU, YOU, YOU is just being a selfish beyotch.
Yep. That's exactly why the other school just refused to let him give a speech. It's not a personal platform to talk about your sexual preferences.
It's a chance to talk about WHO you are.
"I'm not just gay. I'm not just smart. No one is. No label is big enough to hold an entire person."
flan
No it's not. It isn't a platform to celebrate your personal life. You give the speech as a representative of your class and of the academic success you have achieved. It isn't about YOU taking over the event for YOU. So what if the kids cheered? So, what? Kids cheer a lot of things. That doesn't make it right. And, honestly I do think I recall a kid giving some Christian testimony and other posters going ape.

This is absolutely correct. If a heterosexual even mentioned their sexual status the crowd would have clapped for that as well.

Because this is the whole crux of the LGBT movement. We want to be treated equal but we want to be treated special.

It isn't right to take an event that is for everybody and turn it into a Look at Me event. Graduation is for ALL those kids and their families, not just hers. And, you should have the respect to not ram your politics or personal agenda down other people's throats.

This is my whole problem with what is happening. It seems like only homosexuals get any consideration because everyone's trying so hard to be accepting.
