This is EVERYONE's graduation. Not just HERS. Taking it over for your own agenda is just ignorant. And, just more of the Entitled Me Generation.
Apparently no one understands the FACT that the PRINCIPAL approved her speech.
Do you think ONE student can speak for the ENTIRE graduating class?
flan
Yeah, that's kind of the point. I was the Salutatorian. I also gave a speech. It wasn't about Me, Me, Me. It wasn't about the personal details of my life. Wow.
Had she said, I am a heterosexual, would you have wondered why she felt the need to announce it?
To me, it's the same thing.
Why does it matter that she is gay?
1. I can't even believe I have to answer this.
2. Because it is NOT the norm in a predominately HETEROsexual country.
flan
So what?
Why does it matter? What about it had anything to do with the graduating class?

This wasn't somehow "brave". It was shallow and self-centered. The fact that the principal allowed them to give a shallow and self-centered speech is irrelevant.

Well, I could agree with you--but then we'd both be wrong.
I can't speak to every community, FNW. But the principal approved the speech and she got a standing ovation.

If it is truly just who they are, why would it need announced any more than eye color or preferences in candy? - lilyofcourse

If it was preferences in candy, wouldn't you only know their preference if you caught them eating some?
Thas the point. If it is just who they are, then why is it necessary to hijack a high school graduation for some possible validation?
The only purpose this served was agenda driven media coverage.

I've been thinking about this. Does the whole world really need to know about what you do in the bedroom? I don't mean that in a snarky way. I mean that if this girl is so comfortable with who she is then don't you think her friends and family and all the truly important people in her life already know? I would think so. And who else besides that needs to know? Your boss? No. The whole graduating class? No. Just not appropriate.

Why do I need to know her preference either way? What does that have to do with Graduation, the culmination of years of school for hundreds of students, not just Miss Look At Me?

I don't know how many different ways I can say this.
Anything that is not the heterosexual norm is often labeled as "deviant." She was trying to show that being gay was a part of who she is, not the sum total of her identity.

I don't care. That wasn't the Time and Place to "show who she is". Baloney.
But, you absolutely just made my point. She was trying to "show who SHE is". AKA she made the event all about Me, Me, Me, Me, Me!!!!
I would rather hear a heartfelt & personal speech rather than a bunch of meaningless clichés.
flan
There are many ways to make heartfelt, personal speeches without taking over the event for your own personal agenda. It isn't "either/or" flan. She was just being an Entitled Brat.
In one breath you are saying disapproving isn't hate. Then jumping from disapproval to saying "Crucify". A bit melodramatic aren't we? Aren't you trying to crucify the Duggars? Hmm.....?
So if she got up and said she lost her virginity and slept with ten boys this year and it made her a very strong person you'd want to hear that? No, nobody does. Nobody really wants to hear all that crap. It's not necessary to share those things in that forum. Honest to god, sometimes talking about your gay lifestyle is NOT appropriate. We have now taught the LGBT community that they are all VSS's and can talk about and shove their sexuality down everyone's throat constantly. It's not anymore appropriate than it would be for a straight person.

Maybe we should all start making little announcements about ourselves.
Hi. My name is Lily. I have freckles and because of the constant reminder that connect the dots is always a viable activity for anyone next to me, I have become a stronger more resilient person. This thing that is just part of who I am has made me the person I am today.

You need to talk about how you lost your virginity. You know everyone wants to know.

I doubt she went into detail on that.
flan
She shouldn't have been talking about her sexuality to begin with.

It's who she is. She felt it was important.
flan
Who cares? It's not all about HER. That's the whole point. I'm sure she feels it's important to her, but that doesn't mean she makes the graduation all about her. How self-centered can one person be? I mean - her own personal graduation party - have at it. A graduation ceremony to celebrate ALL the graduates? No. She completely dismissed everyone else's day to share her own personal sexual identity. What a selfish twit.
